You need to run as administrator - explained here.
Got admin rights but when typed in chkdsk /r, enter, it said: the type of file is NTFS. Cannot lock current drive:

Hi jayme, I ,ve just got back online after shutting down to try E-recovery.
I managed to get into it, and was offered 2 of 3 choices.
    1. restore system to factory default.
    2. restore from users backup. not available. greyed out.
    3.restore from cd/dvd.
Now which do I require? and what,s the difference from 1 & 3, the 2 options I have? Also. do I have to disconnect from internet whilst doing it?
Can I just switch off WiFi button?
Appreciate any more advice I can print before I take the plunge.
You have been at it as long as me Jayme, i,ve just printed your advice for re-installing you gave me this morning. Thanks very much. I am leaving pc on tonight, something I never do normally, saves all the rigmarole again tomorrow. Got the same as you, 2.5 years old.Do you prefer 7 against vista?

If you've backed up your data, option 1

1 is faster - it lift the factory restore from a hard disk partition

Are you sure you have the restore/reinstall dvd available if anything goes wrong?

Hi closed, I have 2 recovery dvd,s at hand which I bought at time as pc, although they posted them on. Vista was preinstalled. Do I use them at all using option 1? Hard disk partition confuses me; Is that already done for me. I want the easiest way possible. Backed up data:::::? cheers. I,have not long followed your boot up advice.I,ve also got mozyhome backup to cloud which does it auto.Don,t know if it,s of any use?

A factory restore or windows reinstall from disc will put it back to like it was when it left the factory, anything you have added since will be gone, extra programs, data, pics, docs, video's, music, emails, etc .

If you use option 1, you don't need the discs
