I don't have anything to do with Chuggers. IIRC, in many cases the first years subscription that you pay goes as commission to the company that signed you up. Much better to organise your own direct debit in my opinion. Plus they are invariably rude and too aggressive.

Sometimes it takes longer depending on how much the charity is paying the company in commission & how much you are giving.

I just say i already donate to their charity, normally shuts them up
  • Barcelona is infested with them and they're a hardy breed. I whizz along like a whirlwind and they still try to stop me.

The next one that tries to stop me with a phony 'how are you?' is going to get the story of my tragic existence in gruesome detail ...
  • I always hold my phone to my ear or have my music on

1 tried to stop me when I was on the phone I just turned to her and was like excuse me i'm on the phone and then as a was walking away I noticed her following me waiting for me to get off the phone so I just said that Karate lesson is on Tuesday right she ran away so far
  • Sometimes the polite 'no thanks' doesn't even work - last time I did that, the guy started shouting abuse after me about 'dismissing him' - not fun when you're a small, slim girl and the shouter is a 6 foot 4 bloke!

I don't donate to charities which employ chuggers. That means most of the big charities. If they can afford to lose so much to the chuggers and the chugging companies then they don't need my money and I tell the chuggers this. I now donate exclusively to small local charities.
they pay pr companies a LOT to employ them and they get at least 8 quid per hour btw. Im with you all the way on this. I have actually stopped giving to some charities and usually say if they can pay you 8 quid per hr they dont need my 2 quid lol:rotfl:

  • I used to work for a small charity. The people who were on the streets fundraising were volunteers who gave up their own time to help others in need. Big charities work like private corporations they basically employ sales people - but not all charities work this way.

My second point is that many of these charities do really vital work, things that simply the government can't or won't do. They rely on public support and since Cameron's cuts this is even more so the case. People on the street is a relatively cheap way to fundraise. Minimum wage is a lot cheaper than a £50,000 marketing campaign.

In an ideal world they'd simply leave us all alone and make all the money they need from sitting in a free office with the phone ringing off the hook without having to spend a penny on marketing. In the real world economic times are tough and charities are taking to the streets to try and get the money they need to survive.

I don't think anyone is arguing against giving to charities, or even street collections and campaigns, but about the highly scripted pushy sales techniques chuggers are paid to use on us - methods that would be immediately deemed unacceptable if it was a private company using them to sell magazine subscriptions, for instance. But the fact that the charities do use commercial companies to bully charity subscriptions out of people is what people object to, see the reasons given above.

If a charity wants to put volunteers out for a tin shake, I will very happily give usually, and talk with the passionate volunteer about why it means so much to them, and maybe get enthused myself. But chuggers are out with an ulterior motive, pay lip service to the charities support, but are really there to earn £8-odd an hour and make more money for their employers, the charities getting the leftovers.

Charity is an important sector, it is the commercial deception that upsets people and leaves them feeling betrayed, burning up valuable goodwill in the process.

I give £30 a month to various charities, one of which used to be Shelter until I found out that their MD was on £130k - how many £6 a month is that?!
A chugger from shelter stopped me and I told them this, they were shocked and said "that's awful!", I left them looking as if they were trying to work out that a lot of the money they were raising was going towards the salaries rather than the homeless.

I usually just say that I already donate to charity and they leave me alone!

    I'm curious.

What do you think the MD of Shelter should be on?

I journeyed into Leeds city centre for the first time in ages on Saturday, to buy some back to school things for my son.

Me, my partner, son 7 and daughter 2 in buggy.

Was stopped by a man with some comedy joke book items, with the opening line "would you like one of these...", was then told the sob story how he was selling the books while out of work and he had two kids "just like me".

I asked how much, "£3", no thanks I said, plus I didn't have any cash on me at that time anyway.

The man then rudely turned his back and scurried off, muttering under his breath.

IMO, if any of these charities or whatever they want to call themselves, are just basically trying to flog you rubbish, they should not be allowed to approach you, you should have to approach them if you are interested in what they are selling or giving to their charity.
