VENT On street charity workers

You can choose though, donate direct to the charity of your choice. I don't see the relevance to the original post though0

No - they may better their own lives but they also better others as part of the money will go to the charity. I agreed it can be irritating, but also think that charities have to be as proactive as they possibly can be.
If that means people are annoyed by it then so be it. Some people won't give to that charity, but ultimately it helps them get more money, which means that a worthwhile cause has more funding.
Most people, myself included, could give a lot more to charity if they wanted to, and it probably isn't the worst thing in the world having it pushed on us every so often
I could - but I don't WANT to give to charities that shove it down my throat, indeed I actively choose NOT to give to the big hitters. The second chuggers appear for a charity it goes on my "do not donate" list - I HATE being bothered going about my business... my home is not a shop front, I don't pay for my phone line to be bothered by callers and if I'm out going from A to B, I'm going from A to B - not some sales target.
I also don't give to certain types of charity anyway - no amount of acne ridden overly familiar smarm merchant in a tabard will make me... and no, I don't need reminding about the multitude of good causes - if I want to be bombarded with what my £5 a month will do - I'll watch daytime telly since every advert is that or how to sue people.
My money and I'll do with it what I like and the last person I'll listen to about what I should be doing with it is a chugger, particularly the incredibly rude ones.Little miracle born April 2012, 33 weeks gestation and a little toughie!0 -
So being employed to raise money for charity isnt a 'proper job'?? It is an essential funding stream to keep the charities going. No funding = no charity.
Charities existed before chugging and will no doubt exist without chuggers.
Charities attempt to justify chugging on the basis that £50k is better than no £50k despite the fact that it may have cost hundreds of thousands to raise that £50k through chugging.
I'd argue that charities are doing more harm to their image and cause in using chuggers. The man without a signature.0 -

So are you suggesting that they have failed to work out that the costs of running the street workers out weights the donations obtained?? I am pretty sure if this fact were true then they would have worked it out themselves - dont your think?0 -

I don't doubt that the charities have worked out that overall there is a net income stream. But I'm arguing that it's an inefficient form of revenue and they haven't measured the damage that they have done to the charity in terms of public perception. The man without a signature.0 -
I wonder if councils actually make money from allowing the chuggers to ply their trade by having them purchase permits? They're quick to stamp out busking/begging/selling 20 lighters for a pound from a suitcase etc yet allow this. It's wrong, plain and simple and should be stopped.0

There's a string of these people on the route that I walk to work on (main shopping street in the city). They always have an answer, don't they?
...
me: "Sorry, I'm in a hurry"
them: "Too busy to save the children?"
me : "No not too busy to save the children as I am rushing into work for an operation - I am a paediatric surgeon."
or
me: "I don't give to charities except if I approach them, sorry"
them: "but how do you know what good work we do if I don't explain it to you?"
me "I work for the Charities Commission"
Please see suggested replies in red above.
I don't tend to get stopped. I am one of those people who can give "the look". The one that says get within a foot of me and I will break all your fingers.

Chuggers are Skittles and I am the Bowling Ball !
Great fun !0 -
I got stopped by one yesterday as I'm walking through town pushing a pram, with a sandwich in one hand, searching for a seat. I thought it was quite rude of him to stop me while it was obvious I was having my dinner. There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.0
