Moving my number from T-Mobile to T-Mobile!

To keep it short, ive just come out of a contract with t-mobile, and found a great t-mobile deal online for a handset I want, however t-mobile upgrades/retentions couldnt match the deal, so ive had to cancel and start a new contract via a 3rd party website.

Ive got a very memorable number, will it be possible to "move" the number from my t-mobile contract ive cancelled, to the new t-mobile contract ive started, or will it need to go "outside" the network first?

Yes, you will need to port it to another network free PAYG sim, then back to t-mobile. The other network may ask you to top up before giving you the PAC.
  • Thanks grumbler.
Seems like a pain, but at least I wont have to lose my number.

I want to do the same actually!

Which provider would probably not ask for a top up before giving you the PAC code though? Are they allowed to refuse to give you the code without topup?

I've gone out to orange then back in before, wasn't asked to top up, although this was a few years ago.
  • Thanks rev_henry, will give that a go :)

  • I seem to be in a spot of bother now!

I ported my number across from t-mobile to orange PAYG and it transfered over today.

Ive just phoned orange to get my PAC code and apart from the customer sales lady being pee'd off with me for joining orange for 3 days only to port my number back out, she said I have to remain with Orange for 30 days before they can issue the PAC! She said the system wasnt letting her generate a code and that it may be worth trying again tomorrow.

Is this really the case? The reason I chose Orange was because they and tmobile are part of the same company.
  • Just had a look on the ofcom website and found this!
PACs have to be issued immediately over the phone or within a maximum of two hours by text message.
The only reasons why a provider can refuse to give a PAC are:
    • the number does not belong to the customer of the losing mobile provider
    • the account for that number has been terminated
    • the account holder has died
    • a PAC has already been issued and is still valid
    • the customer has not adequately proved that he or she is the legitimate account holder.

Might give them another call back in a minute to find out exactly what the situation is and whether they expect me to wait 30 days or not.
  • Just phoned back and the chap I spoke to didnt even know who or what ofcom was! Kept stating it was company policy that I had to be a customer for 30 days before being issued a PAC. He then went and spoke with his manager who said I dont have to wait 30 days, just 24 hours as the number had only ported in today, which I think is fair enough.
