Sweet trees

  • I found a way round it! I set the wooden part in a plastic cup with plaster of paris in it and then wrapped tissue paper round it and put it in the middle of the glass vase then put the sweets around it! Sorted! For those of you looking for a cheap option for the centre of the sweet tree - I literally used tree! I went up the woods and there were loads of branches that had fallen off the trees, tried to pick up the straightest ones, I let them dry out, sawed them down to size (which was very easy) and then I wrapped them in ribbon! (or you could sand them and paint them!).

Hi i've just done the same but put cellophane in the the original pot first overlapping it it outside holding it with an elastic band then set in plaster & cutting of excess when dry or folding it in so sweets/pebbles etc can be put on top , then it can be removed after so you can use the pot,

Hi, Has anyone made a sweetie tree using a glass vase so you can put in different coloured sweets in layers? I have seen these done but don't know how to do them! How do you get the tree to stay put and not topple over? Is it the weight of the sweets that weigh it down or should I be putting something inside the bottom of it and then covering with sweets? Thanks!

I found that you need a wide based vase/tin bucket or the weight of sweets does make them unstable don't think sweets would be enough !

Think a few have said they use royal icing, or melted choc for things like malteasers, glue gun for wrapped sweets, personally i use cocktail sticks, find it much more secure, never known fruit kebabs or sausages on sticks to be dangerous! obviously if you were making it it for somebody who really doesn't want you to use cocktail stick you could try the other options. I cover the ball with foil, some use tissue hth

tried the edible glue worked on marshmallows but you do have to hold the slightly or stick cocktail sticks in till dry then take them out, glue- 1/4 tspn tylose powder (from cake decorators) mix well with 2 tbspns water will look messy put in covered pot overnight voila a clear glue emerges good look, think it's a bit of trial & error will post when i've tried royal icing !!
  • Hi
Can I ask where you got your polystyrene balls from and how much you paid?
I've just had a look online and it seems they vary quite a bit, what size is best to go for? 120mm?? I need 7 of them, also is there a type of sweet that works the best? Lighter ones perhaps? I love the lollies one well done!
    :j Mortgage Free!! )
Generally trying to cut back where possible :j

Freijasnan: What size ball did you use for the tree with marshmallows and chocolates on? I'm thinking of making one for my OH for his Birthday and that looks like it would be quite a good size (I don't want to buy too big a ball and end up having to spend a fortune on sweets to cover it). Thanks
