Only joined today and it fun to see how people blow things up. My job is an Electrical & Entertainment Team Leader so I can explain the situation with laptops. Laptops/Computing has recently undergone a range change in preparation for our new style displays which are being rolled out into stores as we speak ( mine gets installed thursday). Everytime an area of Non Food undergoes a range change most of the discontinued stock goes to RTC (Reduced To Clear) and gets a markdown, and after each subsequent range change the item receives a further markdown. Most stores are not good at managing their disc stock so it ends up sitting in bonds or warehouses. The company do not help matters as until recently items such as laptops and digital cameras were not usually greatly discounted meaning customers could buy brand new stock cheaper the old disc, fortunately my store is in an affluent town with a large student population so I have a high turnover of stock and often only left with display models when they are discontinued which I sell with a 10% discount. Other stores sit on their old stock with nowhere to put it (we have lots of strange rules regarding what you can and can't do with disc stock) and customers should be able to purchase the laptops at £44, only if they were £1 or 1p (which has happened recently) should they be raffled off to store for charity. Staff attempting to purchase items at these prices are liable to disciplinary action. In recent months the company has realised it has a problem with discontinued stock and implemented the Summer Sale with all disc stock at 50% or more reductions, this has been carried on instore and all of the cheap stock is discontinued and not current stock so it should not be in main fixture. It will most likely be located on a stores grocery seasonal aisle or a reduced to clear section of the nonfood department. It is not some great con on the public and we haven't been hiding stock. The reductions on personal electrical items are to make way for the new range which is due immediately.
thanks for the info, but can you tell us why there are a huge amount of items well below the price that is displayed
  • Been to S1lv3r@#rn today - Nothing at all, not a sausage!

The sat nav's were all removed from the shelfs, marked out of stock. Found a bosch toaster someone mentioned before, but price checked it and it came up 19.95 Not a good start. Bit of a pain when I really had no idea what I was looking for or where I was looking.

Moving on from there I headed to the Spr1ng@#rn Extra, again shopped seemed mobbed. Saw a lot of obvious MSE's members loitering about the price checker machine in the drinks isle with trolley full of kids toys, and I mean several trolleys full packed well over the top. Once again hunting in the electrical's never really turned up much, again no cameras or sat nav's stood out. I did manage to get the two set pyrex dish set, which was sitting on a shelf without any tags. Rang through at £1.75 bought 4 packs. Ran through a couple vax vacuums and a couple toasters but everything was going through at the marked price so gave up and called it quits!

In the end found something, but not exactly what I was looking for :(

    Maybe another time
  • Nothing in Pr*scot, Merseyside. Wish I hadnt gone now

what time did you go, i've been calling in each day on my way home from work, and so far i've got 2 cameras, 2 cam corders, digital photo frames, sewing machine. (that's christmas sorted) they still had the fuji pink camera for £20 this afternoon, and a few other ones for around £40.00 and 1 pair of the £2 head phones, they've never had the twin dvd's as i've priced these. Other stuff i can't coment on, cause i've not searched for what i didn't need.

I called in today to see if i could get a lap top for daughter, but i'd just missed out on the last one and that was at 2.00pm, it was sold for £100, and last night they sold 10 for £44 each. they still had digital photo frames, kettles, toasters (not many though), the last sewing machine that was there yesterday had gone, there was still some baby stuff available (moses basket and sheets), got the girl to check the price of some shavers, which wasn't reduced, but did get a beard trimmer for £2.50 (christmas present) and when upstairs at electrial with my grandson, the fella asked me did he want a digital camera, and it was only 50p 5 year old was pleased as punch with it.

Kitchen area had the pyrex dishes and there were loads of 3p wicker baskets in the middle of a isle and 2p plastic plates.

I would hazard a guess that head office is reducing this stock when they please, so stores aren't necessarily geared up for changes on those days. There is a huge amount of stock affected and some stores will have more staff or more efficient staff (lol) changing prices.

It is a bit of a pain if your store scanner isn't working but I actually managed to nab a couple of bargains today due t the fact that they hadn't been marked so I am happy that can't keep up with the reductions.

So...having heard from what seemed to be the team leader in my local store today that they ARE doing this, is there anything we can do?

Many thanks for this info but can you clarify why stores are opening later tomorrow morning ie 6am rather than 12.01am?
I know that there have been news articles about the forthcoming price war over groceries, reducing food prices and stopping a lot of bogofs etc.
Is this why stores are opening late? ie to get lots of point of sale material and displays up ready for opening?

Also I presume these crazy prices for laptops and the like will continue into tomorrow, as I only managed to get to my local at 3.30pm and they had 4 models of laptops in a glass display by the escalator, these all had A4 signs saying "was 499.99 now 399.99" etc but they were "offer ends 5th october" Im planning to go back to get someone to re check the prices of these as I am confident they are reduced. The model numbers were similar to those mentioned in this thread but not exactly the same. I just didnt have time to find someone to open the cabinet, there were no pieces of paper to take to the scanner either.
