Nat West bank - can't get money out without card and card reader or over the phone!

I posted earlier about the trouble I had logging in to my Nat West account. After waiting for the activation code I logged in and wanted to transfer my money out. I was then told I had to have a card and card reader - which I don't have!

I phoned Nat West and was told that you can't have a card for this e-saver account and you can't transfer the money out over the phone! I then spent an hour speaking to various people and the only way I can get the money out is to open a current account and then order a card reader which will take 3 weeks! I am so mad. I have a large sum of money in this account and need it now! I just can't believe that you need a card to get the money out but they don't issue one for this account!

  • They do issue a card for the e-saver account for use with a card reader, as I have one.
Just request for it online, together with a card reader.
  • I have just spoken to six people on the phone at Nat West, including a supervisor, and they all say that with the account I have you cannot get a card - but you can't get the money out without a card or over the phone!

Can't you do a "pay a bill" transfer or a one off direct debit?. This does not need a money transfer machine with my bank although other transfers do. You will need to have another account with a different bank of course. There must be a way to get this money out.

Find the name of the Chief Executive and email him and mention the banking ombudsman. It sometimes works.

    I really dislike card readers.
Recently I was expected to use a card reader for a £50 gift to my grandson who has an account with the same bank.

    I'm like poster "rail.link".
I only have an esaver with N.West.
I have a card soley for it plus a N.West Card reader - and obviously a PIN code for card
You Have to have the card/pin/reader to set up a new/additional/first payee on the Esaver. This is an additional security method by Nat West, and prevents anyone who may possibly gain access to the account by knowning the passwords merely setting up a new payee to themselves and then emptying your account

I recall I ordered one online via one of the links on the web site - this is a year or so plus back so can't remember details.
I'm sure though I was advised of the requirement to have one at log in stage at one point - which made me order one up.

That's another lesson for everyone - when you set up a new account make sure you figure out the method by which money is removed from the account before you need to remove it. Some savings groups only allow withdrawals to your linked bank account.

    "How do I make withdrawals?

Simply make an electronic payment from your e-Savings account to any other UK bank account. To ensure your funds remain safe, you will need to use your card reader."

The "card" is not a debit card - it is a card for use with the card reader and comes with the card reader. Just order a card reader online as rail.link suggests.

You cannot make an electronic payment without a card and reader. I don't know about the card all I know is that everyone I spoke to was adamant that I cannot have a card for this account - they agreed it was a ridiculous situation! I was nearly insane by the end of the hour stuck on the phone to them! :(

Taken from the banks terms and conditions:
19.10 Withdrawals from your account can be made:
    (a) by electronic transfer to any NatWest account in your
name (or, if you hold the account jointly, to a NatWest
joint account in the same names or a personal NatWest
account of a party to the account); or
    (b) by third party mandate to any other UK bank account.
19.11 Withdrawals will not be accepted by any other method.

Yes but you have to have a card and card reader to make these withdrawals.

You dont need to card reader to transfer between natwest accounts.

Basically this part "19.11 Withdrawals will not be accepted by any other method" is saying you can not make external tranfers from the account which you are attempting to do.

dorsetlady - I'm not sure if you are understanding? You can withdraw your money, but you will have to wait until you receive a card reader. The card that you need will be sent with it - it is not a separate item.
