Thanks for that. As you can probably gather I am not quite up to speed (no pun intended) with all this wireless stuff.
Looking at the reviews it would appear to be a bit hit or miss. Some people have problems others don't.
I am being drawn towards

or

Any thoughts or comments?0 -
Either of those would work with your ADSL connection.
Should you be wanting to save a little more money, a quick look at eBuyer shows {removed url} which would be suitable and save you some money.
Be careful of what other people have told you in this thread.
Should you see a router that claims it is a "cable/dsl router" then walk away as it will not work on your line. A "cable/dsl router" is for those on cable only.
If you're on ADSL via a landline then you need an "adsl (2) router". Depending on your supplier depends on whether you need ADSL 2 but it's backwards compatible so it makes sense to buy an ADSL 2 router now to save money in the future.
I've seen suitable routers in my local Tesco for only a little more than eBuyer charge if you're wanting to buy one locally.0 -
Can't comment on Zyxel, never used them or known anyone with one, my only comment on the linksys would be that I have come across a few people who have had range problems with them..
Do you need a wireless adapter, or is does the laptop have it built-in, and the PC is going to be wired?Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
adamant, the ebuyer example isn't wireless.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

The range issue can occur on the new Linksys boxes, Why Linksys changed from their older router with an aerial on the outside to one with an aerial on the inside that gets worse range I'll never know!

If it can be afforded, then the DG834G from Netgear is a great router with great range (59.99 from eBuyer)
It's so common that it's supported by almost all UK ADSL suppliers - even AOL officially support it*!
* Check before you buy - this is IIRC.0 -
My laptop has it built in and the PC is going to be wired.0

albertross is right, my apologies - my only excuse is to blame the eBuyer search!
While your laptop has it built in, the router also needs to have wireless for it to work. As such, my only recommendation will be the DG834G from eBuyer above. It's not the cheapest router but I'd pay the extra for it.
While the Linksys boxes seem stable, the range on them is rubbish. I have been in the same room as one and suffered a poor signal.0 -
me again-similar thing happened to us, got the wrong router it was for dsl not adsl and we only have the nasty usb sort of modem not ethernet type..anyway got the right sort now, going to connect tomorrow but will i need some sort of wireless reciever..i want to connect between a laptop and desktop both of which have wireless icons on but im sure i need some sort of reciever?Fr. Stack: While you were out, I got the keys to your car. And drove it into a big wall. And if you don't like it, tough. I've had my fun, and that's all that matters.0

Does your router have wireless in it?
If not then you will need a wireless access point that plugs into your router, something like http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/112497
This is how I have my network configured as I like each box to only perform one function and don't like combined router and wireless.0 -
pumpa,
I thought your wireless was sorted weeks ago?
do they both have a wireless card built in?Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0
