Can anyone help me. I have just purchased a Compaq C310 laptop and want to connect to the internet. I have an ADSL broadband connection already connected to my desktop PC but want to be able to use the laptop in other rooms downstairs. A friend told me to get a modem router and connect this to my desktop PC with an ethernet cable but I don't have a clue which one to go for or how much I should be spending. Your help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Since we're all trying to money save THIS would work. No need (maybe0 for a modem router as you have an existing modem (unless it's one of those awful usb only ones
)
The modem connects to the router and the router to each PC you want online. What sort of modem do you have already? Does it support ethernet connections? (post the model etc and I'll check it out if unsure)
Also may want to consider wireless?Neil0 -
i had this one very good make and model and now down in price

I think my modem is one of the awful ones you refer to. It is a Speedtouch 330, which is why my mate told me to go for a different modem / router.0

I have seen this one on another thread but I'm not sure if it is what I need or if it is any good. Anyone know?

You need an adsl wireless router, not cable/dsl. e.g.

and you will need to encrypt it to make it secure:

Am I right in thinking it isn't worth spending extra on anything faster than 54Mbps or on G+ MIMO? My current connection speed is only 1.1 Mbps !!!0

He does need a DSL modem
If he had NTL/Telewest then they would supply the modem and he would need a router only - all the ones listed are fine....Neil0 -

54Mbps or G+ etc are the speeds that wireless can transfer data - the 1.1 Mbps is the speed of your ADSl connection
eg If you get a G+ router you would need a card that can support G+ MIMO, same for 54mbpsNeil0 -
