September 2011 Grocery Challenge

  • Hi Everyone,

This is the end of week 3 of my 5 week grocery challenge and only went to the supermarket twice which is totally alien to me but I am managing my withdrawal symptoms pretty well, although a member of staff did say “gosh I haven’t seen you in ages”

I decided the cheapest lunches that I could make would be good OS hm soup, so in order to make use of the last of the potatoes from the garden I made a huge pot, portioned it up and have enough for 7 days. The only problem it put paid to me getting the freezer defrosted, maybe in a couple of weeks’ time. Huge disaster this week when I made a spinach and feta cannelloni, it was looking good and there would be enough left over for me to portion 2 meals for the freezer, poured over my hm tomato sauce put it in the oven, but my neighbour needed help with getting stuff out of her car, by the time I got back it was all dried up and burnt round the edges (boo hoo) the middle section was edible but rest not worth saving.

I rarely buy supermarket fish but it has been a while since I had some, so indulged myself but what a price £2.01 for one haddock fillet (note to self – back to the fish shop & local fish houses) If that wasn’t bad enough I then found myself in the confectionary aisle and bought 2 for £2.50 (saving of £1.11) of THAT lovely Swiss choc. So all in for this week (NSD tomorrow) I spent a total £13.25, leaving me £17.23 for the next two weeks, hope the toilet roll supplies last!!

Good luck everyone - you all seem to be doing loads better than I'm managing, but I'll learn.
    Jan - June Grocery spends = £531.61
    July - Aug Grocery spends = £219.21
    Sept - Grocery spends = £ 32.53
  • Just a quick update from me, went to Cost-C0 yesterday and managed to spend £146.50 (ouch!) - but we've got enough coffee, toilet rolls, DW tablets and washing powder to last till after christmas and enough cheese, bacon and chicken portions to last for at least a couple of months so not too bad.

Had to pick up a couple of bits in Mr T yesterday too, managed to spend £10.48 and then went to A!di today to get a chicken, milk, veg and some cleaning stuff (and treated us to some of their ridged crisps and chocolate:D) so spent another £21.58.

So far this month that means I've spent just over £206 out of my £250 for the month. Leaves about £42 with 21 days left, so £2/day. As all meals to the end of the month are already planned and almost all are already cooked and in the freezer this should be easily doable as will just need to buy fruit, veg and milk. Here's hoping!

    cheers

Well I complained to Mr T as their deelivery last night was a farce and they have credited me with £10 e voucher so that will help later in the month, been to discount store and B and M today and stocked up on tinned fruit, red bull, got some noodles soup things on offer, some little cheese biscuits for dd and other bits, got both daughters some peppa pig pjs to put away for xmas too. Haven't looked at toals properly yet but I reckon another £40 or so. Spent £1 seeing if jelly glitch worked but didn't. DD has decide that she wants to go on packed lunches next week so need to think about things for that, taking grandma to Mr A in morning so will pick up some bits then hopefully not spending too much.

Had a go at toad in the hole tonight for the first time - HUGE success and I mean that literally. They rose soooooooo much. Needed a wee bit more salt in the batter but I'm feeling very pleased with myself. I'm pretty sure the oven setting on the microwave cooks faster than a normal oven but I'm starting to get the hang of it. When I finally get a proper kitchen, I reckon everything will be undercooked for a while!

£3.98 spent today in Lidl on chicken goujons and crisps.

£13.38 in Tesco on toothpaste, porridge oats, sunflower seeds, lentils, pasta, tomatoes, washing tablets, sweetener, gravy granules and some Frootz button things which I think were priced incorrectly at 43p for a box of 5 as individual packets were the same price (although on opening the box it only had 4 packets...hmm!) Also got a newspaper and ringbinder (for my new course :D) which i'll include, although not officially groceries.

I did try and use one of the vouchers i'd been sent (£5 off a £20 shop) and was going to get the 3 for £10 on meat, but really wasn't impressed with what they had so decided not to just buy other things for the sake of it. £20 is a big shop for me!!

My cat just deleted a loooong post I'd done (perhaps it's for the best!). I have done a second weekly shop today, stayed out of shops all week (yay me!) Bought a month's supply of cat food and a sack of sunflower hearts for £35 in pets at home, they've gone up from £26 just before the summer holidays. I will have to ration the birds more, but this was one expense I wanted to keep. So, bought more stocks from T's today, and with the pets at home spend, it came to £74. I've updated my signature (hope that works).

I shouldn't have to spend much more this month so hoping to squeak in on budget.

I've got £239.98 left to last the month.

Not sure what all the spends were been to various shops and the fishmongers.Just checked what was left in the grocery purse.

had friends round for dinner last night so spent a fair bit on that- not complaining had a lovely night it just means I will need to be strict on this weeks shop.

Hope everyone else doing well :)
