Could be - as nothing happens at all, but surely it would take me into Bios whether I had a duff HDD or not?? Does anyone know the F key to get into Bios on a Acer? DG

If I do this from switched off then it just tried to boot then switches off. If on then I do this to switch it off. DG

What does just tries to boot mean, what comes on screen. The 10 seconds thing is to rule out hibernation if you left it plugged into mains when you did the battery out check

No I did remove the power cable before taking the battery out, and the screen just stays completely blank. DG

  • When you try to turn it on, what happens, exactly.

One thing that worked for me on an older Acer laptop when this happened: Turn it off, then hold down the Fn key as you turn it on.

I have it connected to the power and the light at side of a battery signal is on. I switch it on, and the light at the side of it whicch looks to me like a light bulb with dashes around it to show it is lit comes on, it whirrs for a few moments then nothing, the screens remains black and unlit and apart from the switch on button lighting, nothing else is lit.. It was worth a try Esqui, but made no difference. To switch it off I hold the on/off switch down for 10 seconds, and then it just returns to the power cable connected light. DG

how sure can you be that the cause of the fault is what you have been told. because if it had been dropped the next step I would take would to make sure that the memory stick(s) are seated properly.

    Try this

Remove Power Cord, Remove Battery and hold down the power button for about 10 seconds. Release power button and replug the Battery and Power supply back in.

And try turning it on again

enigma - it is not what I have been told, but deduced from Googling around this model. When you look on Ebay you see loads of faulty motherboards up for sale.

I have also tried CoolHotCold's test too, with no differing result, and to ensure have removed and reseated the memory, but no joy.

Tried my own Recovery Disk in the laptop, and it recognised and tried reading it, but the screen still remained blank.

As new motherboards are around $100 I am not going to suggest they go this route, as I do not feel I "know" the problem 100% and if they take it in then the repair could well be not much less than a new lappy.

One other thing - the opening and closing of the lid does feel stiff and clunky - compared to my Dell - is this normal for Acer's?

Does anyone have any other ideas/tests?

Thanks for all your responses so far. DG
