Many, many thanks to you both! I've never claimed any benefits before so don't even know how I go about doing this! It's also good to know the amounts exactly and that's very helpful. As my frugality extends to getting all of my baby books out of the library (including one from the 1970s), they all state differing amounts, so I was thoroughly confused!

Starnac- when is your little one due? I hope you are keeping well and wish you all the best for the birth.

Never claimed benefits myself before either (except SMP when pregnant with DD). This is paid and sorted out by your employer. (you did say you were employed didn't you) Have you let your employer know you are pregnant? If you put it in writing to HR they will write back telling you how much leave you are entitled to and when it can start. You can then negotiate when you want to finish. That's what I did anyway

Bump here is due 1st November so got 9 weeks to go. Am finishing work early though due to A/L and to spend some time with DD before baby is born. When you due??

    Hi Starnac!
Congratulations again on the bump - not long to go now! Finishing work is a great idea- I was thinking of working right up to the event, but it would be nice to finish early and get everything ready.

Ours is due around Christmas - a lovely present!

I am employed - I work for a tiny firm and the issue of maternity has never come up in its history before! Thanks for your advice - I have let work know and will get onto that next week! :j

Maybe an idea to get onto them then so that they can check their obligations to you.

Ooh that is a lovely present. you're not that far behind me then

when you finish is entirely a personal choice. a friend of mine worked right up until her due date (baby was late luckily :D ) but some people find it hard to adjust going from a career girl to a mummy in such a short time. I personally have a very active job and am starting to struggle a bit now especially as I have pains in my pelvis. Maybe if I did an office job it wouldn't be as much of an issue. obviously it's a personal choice and the more time you take off before the less time you have off after the baby is born.

you have to decide what is best for you physically, emotionally and financially.

It's amazing how generous people can be - particularly -and this sounds bizarre - people I don't know that well! It was like Christmas but reduced by 90% in size! Little babygros, jackets, towels and a beautiful Moses basket. There were also some toys - I'd never even have thought to have bought anything like this!

Little do you know you are the answer to the prayers of people who are desperately trying to declutter their houses of all their outgrown baby stuff!

  • You're not alone PBR, I read but don't often post as I'm not sure I can help etc. I know how you feel, when we try for a baby I doubt we'll get any help & then we'll probably have to work until we're 70!

Chin up & I'd be looking for new friends ...

Well I don't think anyone is reading. I'm prattling away to myself here, but I'm going to let off a rant so it's out of my head and I can get on with being my normal positive self! I know that things are tough for most people and there are wars, people starving and in dire poverty all over the world, but I want to get my moan (put in a MFW context) out of my head.

It was all over the news yesterday; life is tough for working families. DH and I appear to be living proof of that and we appear to have timed it worse than most! With our LO due in a few months, I knew things would be tight - they always are for us! We always seem to time things so badly. We bought a house just as things went pear shaped. We knew they would, but have been hit with a punitive interest rate which made one of our friends laugh at our much mortgage cost: "For that ****hole???!!!!" were his exact words.

Now, after listening to our "friends" harp on about how their tax credits (up to £700 in some cases) "paid for our holiday to Disneyland", health in pregnancy grant ("it paid for our new sofa"!, child trust fund (here's £250 and another £250 to come!), free laptops etc etc, we had a look and we will get ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! Now that's fine - why should the taxpayer fund our choice to have a child? But after all the money we've shelled out in tax and really having had our noses rubbed in it over the last few years, I am simply stunned and disappointed.

Having said that, we do get something. £20 a week child benefit. We'll get by, but I can't help feeling punished. DH and I work so damn hard when we'd be better off if we didn't. if I think about it too much, I want to cry.

Instead though, I've just read through my post. I think after the mortgage is paid, my next project is to get a better quality of friend!

Sorry for the moan. Normal service will now be resumed.....

Lots of us are reading.. Looks like its a moaning day (see my diary too)..
My SIL is on benefits when she could be working, and they amass a huge amount of taxpayers money.. The kids are spoilt rotten, however, they are in £40/50K worth of debts..
At the end of teh day, mine & your conscience (sp?) are clear.. We are not sponging the tax payers, and thats whats important..

I'm reading too! and I agree with Froggy.

We don't have any children yet, we knew we couldn't afford them, then I see on facebook girls I went to school with have 3 or 4 children and don't work (we're in our late 20s now) makes me cross but I wouldn't want to bring a child into the world if I was reliant on benefits.

We're trying to sell our house and move now - then I'll be hitting the MFWs big time!

Hi…just wanted to say hello and to wish you luck on your MF journey and your baby journey. I’m usually a lurker, especially on this board as I don’t yet have a mortgage. Hoping to join in soon though!

Just wanted to say, don’t let other people get you down – it’s so easy to be jealous of people who seem to get everything for nothing, but it doesn’t hurt them and just gets you down. Looking forward to seeing you back to your positive self soon.
