I was just reading this and thinking about all the 'grinding' references that you get in life- in particular putting your 'nose to the grindstone'...life does wear you down I think. I'm lucky in that I have a lovely OH and a very bouncy greyhound who never seem to get worn down. We don't talk about it, but for me being with such buoyant people (yes, the greyhound is a person!) helps a lot. Sometimes I think it just takes accidentally discovering something that gives you joy (the dog, in my case) to help pick you back up. I say accidental because I had no motivation to go out seeking something!

I feel like this too at the moment. My DS is 1 both OH and I have to work full time because the mortgage and bills won't pay themselves. Despite working full time, we don't have much money to spare and weekends are spent on housework or other things we haven't had the time to do.

But, I suppose this is life and I can either let it get me down or I can try and make the most of it. I do exactly what you have suggested to your friend - read a magazine, nice soak in the bath, paint my toe nails. Also, I think you friends needs to remember that she isn't the only person in this situation and most people i know are in the same situation, or if not, they have different worries.

True there are many people in the same position if not worse and that is the thing to remember that there are others but I guess she thinks she is the only one it is happening to-which it is not:D

I like the dog idea, she has not got a dog but they always say mans best friend:D

Mine is woman's best friend :D As soon as I walk through the door he doesn't want to know OH!

Any chance of taking some time out to do something nice together? A cheapy diy pamper or cinema visit with pizza or something (use vouchers to make it cheaper). I know I don't know you but I've caught a few of your recent posts and sounds like you've had a bit of a rough time of it recently and could do with a treat too.

I know it probably sounds unappealing, but exercise is really good for depression (regardless of how severe it is, or whether your friend even thinks of it as depression or not).

Does she like (or could she be persuaded to try) jogging, cycling, aerobics, salsa dancing, judo, swimming... or anything like that?

  • Agree, you need to keep cheery and a glass half full is much better than a glass half empty, but sometimes things just overwhelm and the strains and stresses of modern life can just build up so gradually that you don't notice it until you end up feeling - like your friend - 'battle weary'.

Think it helps to do a stock take of your life and to sit down with someone who knows you really well and try and work out a strategy to overcome the feelings of helplessness that can trigger major depression if not addressed.

Life is hard at the moment.

Everywhere you go there are people struggling with money worries, unemployment and other big problems in their lives. When your experience and the experience of those around you is more negative than positive it has a huge impact on the quality of life.

Small steps can make big changes.
