Best advice is not to get a car yet.

Ask your parents very nicely to insure you to drive their car when they are not using it AND (on bended knees) ask them to insure their car through Admiral or Direct Line (there may be others) who allow named drivers to build up no claims bonus with them. In a couple of years you are then likely to be able to buy a better car for yourself with affordable insurance.

There is a reason why not many 17 year olds own and run their own cars.

Crazy price. You could probably get taxis everywhere all year and it would be cheaper!

    Whats the car?

I'd recommend Admiral multicar. We found them to be the very best when our son passed his test earlier this year. We have 3 cars and son, husband and I are all insured as main driver on our own cars, husband and I are named drivers on each other's and son's car.

Our insurance for all 3 cars cost about £1500 for the year! And we are all earning our no claims bonuses as we each are the main driver of one of the cars.
To get the multicar bonus you don't even have to add a 2nd car straight away; if your parents' insurance expires in a few months, they will give you the benefit immediately as long as they commit to insuring with Admiral at that renewal date.

Can't see us ever getting a better deal
(Oh, and that includes breakdown cover as well on all of the cars)
  • Thanks for more responses, I will try multicar because my parents insurance is up and also my brothers and sister's are due for renewal soon.
The car i'm looking at is a ford ka 1.3 collection (no mods) one of the cheapest i have found a quote for after my brothers renault clio,
I'm in sixth form at the moment which i think makes me a full time student or would it make me part-time.
I have a part time job as a relief lifeguard at a local leisure centre (should i mention this).
The quotes i have given are for third part fire and theft.
I live in mold, wales google it, it is a tiny place with good roads and low road deaths tbh.
Also there is absoulutly no way i would lie on my insurance my dad checks it most of the time.
I tried adrian flux and they said they would not insure which was a bit depressing.
I will get back to you guys with the quotes i get for multicar and after i go see the broker tomorrow.

    Thanks Guys

You’ll often find that fully comp but with the highest excess possible is cheaper than third party insurance.

Worth giving it a try on the comparison sites & see what numbers you get

Sorry to hear that OP- I'm afraid that's how insurance is going now...

And I assume living in a tiny place in Wales a car would be fairly useful.

It would make you a full time student- to be honest the lifeguarding wouldn't really change anything. They may ask for a secondary occupation, but list student as your first.

Definitely try comprehensive rather than TPFT, in my experience its cheaper for young drivers. Also have you tried a car with a lower engine size? I always say to young drivers to stay below a 1.2, 1 litre even better! Keep your excess up, see if doing pass plus will lower your premium too, some companies give a discount. Elephant.co.uk are usually quite good for young drivers if you get no joy from Adrian Flux.
  • ok just got back from the insurance broker and was quoted.... wait for it £6500 tptf and £7500 fully comp could not believe it i think i have tried every avenue. My dad will ring churchill some time today and see if they can do anything because they are a existing customer.
I also tried the post office whilst i was in town and they would not quote at all because of the fact that my insurance exceeds £5000 which was annoying. The woman who helped told me to try putting my mum on as the main driver and me as a named  could not believe it.
So i feel like i might have to invest in some strudy walking boots and a coat for the next few years.

Lower engine size does not always mean lower premiums depends on a lot of other factors. There have been many cases of young drivers getting cheaper insurance on bigger engined, non boy racer cars than little 1.2 l Corsas and the like.

The reason is that the accident rate for ALL sexes under 25 is very high. That is why the Ins Co's put the figure so high to stop youngsters driving. Fronting is illegal, if you have an accident, say killing a passenger or pedestrian who is earning a fair salary, then you could end up paying 10,000£'s in damages as you were driving without insurance. Can anyone explain why a 17 year old wants/needs a car?
