Puncture wound/bite from another dog

Zara just got bitten while we were on a walk.

Does not look very serious , "just" a puncture wound from a tooth, not very deep so not going to ruch to the vets.

But it is in an awkward placem just above the elbow so here the question.

Shall I try to bandage it? After cleaning it up - with what? Salty water? How much salt in how much water?

She is not limping or anything, will watch her and if anythign goes worse will of course take her to the vets but right now I do not see the need for it.

The other dog was a GS too and he was on a lead as known to be agressive, Zara was playing with this dog's mum (they know each other) and tumbled too close to him and that is when he bit her... :(

Not blaming anyone but myself, should not let her get close to Max but she was so happy to see and play with Sacha.. her "old mate" - Max is about 2 yo now and always on a lead ...

clean it with warm salty water, but be aware dog bites can easily get infected and she may need anti biotics so keep a close eye on it.
I would not try to bandage it.

Bathe it in normal saline which is one teaspoon to a pint of water (boiled and cooled water)
Hope it heals well for you.

    Thanks everyone.

She looks/behaves ok - hope it does not get infected, will keep her way away from dirty water/lakes etc

She is long haired though so difficult to see exactly what it looks like under the fur and it is above her elbow so.. grrrrr

Really keep an eye on this - dog's mouths carry numerous pathogenic bacteria so the wound will likely already be infected. Hopefully her own immune system will do the job but if there is any pain, swelling or discharge take her straight to the vet for antibiotics.

agree with posters above, especially as puncture is potentially into elbow joint?

make sure you watch it for the next week or two. have you got any hibiscrub or similar?

I got vets very close to me, 24/7 vet hospital

Will be watching how it heals/if it heals for the next few days but have a horrible feeling it may cause problems, it is not above elbow, it is on the elbow damn it so stretches when she bends her front leg

Not bleeding at all, only did when I touched it with cotton pads soaked in salty water, managed to cut some fur off around it too

If I see anything I do not like on this wound - will be off to the vets of course

I am just so damn angdy with myself that I have allowed her close enough to the other dog
  • Accidents happen, don't worry!

Hopefully she'll heal up uneventfully. :)
