How long before you moved your newborn into his/her own room on nighttime?

I co-slept with my daughter for 2 years! She was ready to move out before that but we had to get the bedrooms sorted due to baby no3 who is on the way. She has only ever stirred a couple of times in the night. She's been in her own bed in her own room for the last 3 weeks or so now and has been absolutely fine. It doesn't always go that you make a rod for your own back by sharing your bed with them (as many many people told me I would!).

  • After about 2 nights as I'm a light sleeper and they were too noisy! :D

Very interesting question as myself and my brother were removed from our birth mothers within a few days of our births, and taken to various foster homes where I doubt we slept with the foster parents... We must be lucky to have managed to lived to our 40's! :rotfl:

Even in the 10 years since I had my babies there seems to be a lot more "scare-mongering" than I remember. My babies were prem, and at higher risk of cot death but I can't recall being told to keep them with me for 6 months, but then perhaps I was too tired to listen :p

You made number 3 with a baby in the bed? Is it only me that finds that a little odd?
Not only would a feel a little weird having sex with my kid in the bed. I would no doubt forget they were there and bounce them out on to the floor anyway, or a bottle of lube would get thrown down and the baby would end up eating it or something.
Any way you look at it, social services would probably have been brought in.

You are assuming baby number 3 was made in the bed...

Anyway lots of people co-sleep for long periods and manage to have 'marital relations'. With my son someone could scream like a banshee and bounce about the bed as much as they wanted and he wouldn't even stir :rotfl:
  • both mine moved into the cot in their own room when they were 6 months old. DS1 slept through from 10 days old and DS2 was 20 days old. hoping if i have anoter LO he/she wont follow that pattern and be 30 days old before sleeping through lol.

for me co-sleeping isnt something i liked the idea of nor could i do it. if one of the kids has been ill and throwing up they are in with me ditto with a nightmare they come in beside me for a while but DS1 sleeps in some freaky postions and sleeps in the middle of the bed (as in half way between the top and bottom and sides) meaning i cant snuggle under the duvet how i need to be to sleep and DS2 thinks mummys bed=PARTY TIME!!! and jumps on my back shouting "horsey horsey" or trying to get me to read books at 2am or play racing cars!!

Two oldest, both over a year. My youngest is 7 months and I couldn't think of him being on his own quite yet, so will probably do the same with him and wait til the year is up.
