In principle that sounds a good idea.2018 totals:

Mortgage Overpayments £5,5000 -
Would seem to be a win:win.
The boredom must be incredible leading to more and more violence. The sewing mailbags of old is maybe the sort of things we should be looking at. Good shout Buffy.
Although as a small caveat and I have to admit it made me laugh - one American prison thinking exactly along the lines of keep prisoners busy, build skills for after release, make money to contribute towards their keep etc set up a call centre which business could buy time from for cold calling, customer support, retention etc.
Closed down very quickly when one prisoner threatened a woman who tried to cancel a service by reading out her home address to her and advising he'd send the boys round if she didn't renew. I bet that's an idea they've not been in a hurry to repeat :rotfl::A Let us be grateful to people who make us happy: they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom. Marcel Proust :A0 -
Hi KJ, just caught up with the last 2 years of your life!!

I thought I had it tough. Thanks for the perspective.
Where is the 'bow down on my knees to your awesomeness' smiley when I need it??

Hi PLMBL and thank you so much for reading my drivel and everyone else's common sense.
It's lovely to have you here...as you may have gathered criminology is the subject de jour...brings out our warm, fuzzy sides :rotfl:
I'm certainly not awesome...what you need is a bad tempered, tired, misanthropic, grrrring smilie...but I'm touched you chose to ignore my worse traits and let me carry on pretending I'm nice
How about this....:A Let us be grateful to people who make us happy: they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom. Marcel Proust :A0 -
So after a particularly bleugh week we went to the theatre last night to see Oedi!!!!!. Very funny...small clip below.
http://www.traverse.co.uk/whats-on/event-detail/253/oedi!!!!!.aspx
I've been on lots of drugs this week and decided to come off the sleeping tablets last night so I could hopefully experience the worse over the weekend. 6:30am this morning before I dropped off, not looking forward to tonight.
Think I'll swing by Ald1 in the morning and see if they have any of the heated fleeces. Having completely trashed Grandad's birthday but being ill I must make some effort to get him a pressie.
Hoping to actually follow through on going to the pictures this weekend so plan is to see Sunshine on Leith. Vouchers for Pizza Express, F&B and Burger place so we'll get some sort of deal.
Husky full of pasta, she has very continental tastes. We tried to give her bolognese sauce once without the spaghetti and she refused point blank to touch it. Now I make extra spaghetti and it easily feeds me, SB, husky and two kittens (they also love sucking up the pasta strands). Tiny cost but lotsa fun

I do honestly think they are too soft on prisoners and that society needs to realise there are some very bad people out there who need punishment and it should be difficult and painful. so there.
Hope you are feeling good today KJ XXXXX
Some prisoners are allowed to do jobs around the prison such as cleaning and preparing meals etc which they get paid a small amount for - this is usually spent on their canteen (a bit like a tuck shop where they can buy extra food, toiletries, tobacco etc)
Every prison has an industry which keeps the prisoners busy, in my county one of the prisons break down TV's and the components get recycled, another does the laundry for all the other prisons locally and another makes clothing for the prisoners - towels, jeans etc.
Other prisons make up the breakfast packs, make signage for other prisons etc
The prisoners that work get paid (not minimum wage but something small like £1.50 per day)
If they don't spend all their canteen when they leave they get a cheque.
Then of course there is education - a lot of prisoners are also having lessons - some in just basic english and maths and others take degrees etc.
I could talk about this all day - my DH used to work in a prison and it is quite fascinating. (It is the juveniles that don't have an industry but mainly they are in education)0 -
Glad you enjoyed the theatre.
Hope you get a fleece.
I have dispatched my mum to get one for me as she is much nearer Aldi!! than me.

Hello EE. I agree it's fascinating and so complex. Wonderful hearing your views and thank you for sharing your knowledge.
I think the thing that would literally drive me insane is the noise and close proximatey of others. I would commit additional offenses to be sent to the relative bliss of solitary confinement.
Beanie oh Beanie, SB went but no fleeces. However (a) much as I love him he is a small boy and (b) see (a). I shall pop in on my way home tomorrow. Luckily I hadn't said anything to Grandad so there's no warm and snuggly dreams been dashed. Did you get one? Is it as snuggly as promised?
I've been good and done paperwork today. Been feeling very sick again but stuff needs done so I've done it. Still not seen Sunshine on Leith...cunning plan is Tuesday night as night school is on half term.
And....my biggest news for last I've just bunged £90k into my offset mortgage. That leaves just under £26k left to find. I'm a bit peeved to be honest that it takes 5 working days for the money to electronically transfer between BoS and Santander. Although not as bad as the 4 working days from BoS to BoS I've also got going.
Once it's over I'll get the balance in my signature and treat that like a debt so I can aggressively watch it shrink. I will be much relieved when the offset matches current mortgage. Means I'm currently about 90% offset now which is very good news :j:j:j
(Please don't throw me out of here tho)

Hurrah for the 90k winging its way to the offset :j :j
My mum got two fleeces, one each & there was only one left after that.
Wont get it til I see her next.
Must count out all my points so I can give her some pennies.
4 days from BoS to BoS ~eek~what is all that about?

Ha and I came onto MSE for a respite on the book I'm reading that I'm supposed to review for Uni assignment all about prisoner's families (very mature student) raises a lot of questions about how some prisoners get sucked into the prison culture and others don't and how it impacts on their relationships outside....amongst other things.
Jen I've lurked pretty much from day one and your strength is an inspiration -and you're also pretty darn funny at times too .I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole
