I don't think we need anecdotal evidence to support this, but I'm sure there's plenty available.

I also single out Tesco becuase, unlike Halfords, Currys, Dixons, TK Max and such, we don't need one on every third street corner. Having a corner shop though is godsend, but increasingly, it's a corner Tesco Metro. Certainly, this is a success for Tesco, there's no argument. But it's also a massive negative for the community as choice and variety have gone and small local businesses who were once valuable members of the community have gone too.

The next argument is what the likes of Tesco have done to our farming industry.

Tesco at the moment are concentrating their efforts on the likes of spa and similar local shops, basically if you have such a shop near you then if it hasn't already a new metro will be springing up shortly to crush the existing trader, once done no doubt these smaller ventures (metros) will be abandoned once again as not being viable. Their sole purpose is to decimate local trade.

Interesting theory. I think you mean Express, not Metro. My understanding is that the majority of sites perform absolutely fine.

Can't wait for the day that Tesco corporate policy is to close sites...That'll be the same day I win the lottery. Without buying a ticket

If i have interpreted it correctly ben means that tesco go into a high street with an express store, take all the trade forcing other shops to close and then shut the express store thus forcing consumers into the larger superstores.

Nice theory but not quite one that i subscribe to i am afraid - i thought their sole purpose was to make money not to decimate trade.

Ben, out of interest, are you a tesco shareholder?

This isn't as far-fetched as it seems. This is quite a valid policy (nasty, but valid).

The issue is more that these smaller stores are all glossed with the same Tesco brush of Low Prices yet it is within these stores that it's the least applicable.

If we (ahem, the great Brittish public) let them, Tesco will eventually close most corner shops. We need an uprising!

I would suggest that rather than believe in the lies that a certain newspaper printed at the time

Whilst I disagree with virtually everything spa says in regard of tesco, it's impossible to argue with his opinion on The Scum.

Murdoch and all his dirty little henchmen are below contempt. Pushing the blame onto the fans has also long been a mainstay of the filth too.

Can you beleive that Liverpool council are to invite kelvin mackenzie to the city?

    I wouldn't be so sure

In my local area in a new developement there was once a Co-Op at the top and a IIRC One-Stop at the bottom.

The one stop is now an Express, which is actually better. The Co-Op was purchased by Tesco and immediately closed. This forced customers to use the Express or travel further afield, thus saving Tesco the expense of operating at this location and driving up sales at the Express

Whilst I don't want to sing the praises of Tesco, near my mum her only local small supermarket was Kwiksave when they changed owners the store went completely down hill. My mum has lost the only store she could go shopping at independently, she would love this store to be turned into a Tesco Metro. If it is taken over by Spar or another smaller company prices will be too expensive for her.
