By the way, I received many public as well as private messages about the way I was treated on this board when I first posted. This is a quote from one of the public expessions of support, just so you can see other MSE posters perceptions.

Hmm I find it very odd that people PM'ed you with support yet no-one had sent me at PM asking me not to be rude lol.

As I said, I don't think anyone was particularly rude, just a lot of people seem to take everything said personally.

    Have a nice day :)
well you have already told us that, repeatedly! i'm glad it makes you feel that you're right..... *sigh* and people were pretty damn rude to me on that thread (when i wasn't rude to anyone as far as i can tell) but i wouldn't gloat about things happening to them months later as it doesn't matter. your behaviour right now tells me more about you than anything in that arguement so i'll step away now.

if ONW leaves, then hundreds of posters would lose out. much as you like 'discussion' (and by discussion you clearly mean different opinions as long as they say you're right!), you're not in a position to be able to give detailed responses on student finance, university policy, careers advice etc etc. she can and she did. with her free time, for many years. a few parents getting touchy about different opinions is really irrelevant in the context of the number of students and graduates helped on this board.

anyway, i'm done with this. i'm so disappointed that people who i thought more of are this petty.

  • I could not believe my eyes when I saw 'ppr' next to ONW's name! She gives endless good, commonsense advice. OK, she doesn't dress it up, she tells it as it is, and sometimes she can be quite acerbic, but hey, we're all different and I for one would rather have correct advice delivered in a forthright manner than someone saying 'there, there', and patting me on the head but actually being no help at all.

I'm so glad her 'ban' is only temporary and will wait in anticipation to welcome her back.

I have no idea what the comments/thread were that caused this, so can't comment specifically.

    I'll probably be next.

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

I am shocked that ONW has been squelched. I have never seen her post anything that was rude, although she is certainly robust. More to the point, she is very well-informed and punctures delusions: and that is helpful, since there is no sense at all in telling someone that they are going to be funded for something when in fact no funding is available.

    Returning to the original question:

Most Economics degree courses involve a good deal of Mathematics, so giving up Maths at this stage would not be a good idea. If she struggles with Maths, that might be a reason to consider not doing Economics, although the fact that she has overcome these difficulties and obtained a high grade in a difficult subject is a very good sign (a good sign for anything that she goes on to study).

Sussex is famous for the way it blends different subjects into its degree courses, so it offers the same kind of flexibility as the universities in Scotland.

She might want to consider what it is that attracts her about the subject. If it is the hope of job, she could consider subjects like Business Studies. If she is interested in the creation and distribution of wealth, a course like Politics or Development Studies might be more satisfying for her. (The School of Development Studies at UEA offers courses that combine Economics and Biology, so that might be worth exploring.)

Thanks voyager, there are many interesting points in your post. DD is at Reading Festival this weekend. After a few days of sleep I'll see where her heads at!
