Do you know if it is advantageous to get an early application in? Or does it make no difference?
I think in theory it doesn't matter as long as you get it in by Jan 15 (think that's the closing date). Some universities don't make offers until after then but others make them straightaway (my son got all his offers except one by the end of October). As melancholly says, may as well get it in if it's ready. I just asked my son what he thought and he reckons the advantages of an early application are 1) less time to be stressed about writing personal statement 2) more time to think about decision on offers 3)some unis make offers early and if they've had loads of good candidates, who knows what they'll do in Jan? 4) get it out of the way (but don't rush it), then you can concentrate on A levels. However if your daughter isn't sure about something then she should take all the time she needs. There is some good advice on personal statements (and lots of other university related things) on The Student Room. Also a lot of drivel too :)

I disagree, no-one was rude to SMF2, we just all disagreed with her.

And to be honest, if you think she (and others) were rude, I warn you now, never go to the pension forum and ask if you can take your pension early.

I don't think she was rude, just a bit scary! OK I may be a wimp, but it seems I wasn't the only one who found the discussion a bit robust. Looking back I think the problem here was that there were some misunderstandings about what SMF2 was trying to find out and misinterpretations of her comments.
I have not yet been tempted to visit other areas of the forum, but thanks very much for the warning! I don't have a pension worth asking questions about in any case, so I'll be safe there.
I think ONW knows a lot of useful stuff. Everyone has a different tone and I have tried to learn to look beyond this as there is a lot of helpful information here. And usually people are very friendly :)

Yes that's fair enough, it does take quite a lot to get used to a lot of other users and I suppose as I've known ONW longer I know what she means when she says stuff.

Same with a guy called bendix, he can be extremely rude - but hilarious funny. Now although he says things rudely he means it in a jokingly but serious way, and to people that don't know him they just think he's a total !!!! :)

See, sometimes I don't like what GeneHunt says, but then threads like this I realise he's alright really ;)

forums are written text on a screen so it's always best to assume a good interpretation wherever possible as so so so much gets lost in translation. it's not worth being too touchy (although we all get irritated sometimes). i sound like a regular Pollyanna, but people need to assume the best a bit more (or at least not assume the worst). people also have surprisingly long memories on forums and from an initial encounter, then allow their interpretations of every other post the person makes to be coloured.....

(and the more you spread across the boards, the more you can see who you can 100% agree with someone in one context and then be vigorously opposed to them in another!! i've even disagreed with ONW in DT a few times! ;))

i also think coming onto a thread and effectively gloating about someone being PPRed is poor form. end of. with the exchanges that happened, it's perhaps not too surprising, but it does you a disservice.

Not at all. I've nothing to be ashamed about over the way I've dealt with OBW's nastiness.

I came on this board to discuss Student Loans 2012 and that's what I've done. To be honest the rest of it is just an irrelevance (which is why I never pressed the abuse button, it would take up too much of my precious time). Making the right financial decisions for me and my family is what counts. I keep my "eyes on the prize", the rest is a distraction.

But just because I didn't press the abuse button (and trust me it did cross my mind) doesn't mean other posters won't. You do OBW a disservice by encouraging her in her ways, for if she continues, eventually she will get banned for good.

By the way, I received many public as well as private messages about the way I was treated on this board when I first posted. This is a quote from one of the public expessions of support, just so you can see other MSE posters perceptions.
I read part of that thread but aggression for no reason gets right on my wick. Well done for being cool and stating your points calmly. I would have just ended up being really rude i think. I forget some boards have people who are not so nice and supportive.
    Have a nice day :)
