Hope this is not too personal, but what disability does Mr GA have? Reason I ask, he may qualify for reductions on bills.
No worries, I don't mind the questions :)
He had a stroke, and not recovered to any real degree & was diagnosed with Diabetes a while back too. According to DWP - he's not bad enough to qualify for higher rate bands for care - and none at all for mobility, despite problems walking & doing basic things etc. Therefore he doesnt meet the minimum qualifiers for Disability assistance most of the time.

do you mind me asking, you can PM me if too personal - Mr GA - how bad is his mobility? does he fall over? does he have to walk with a stick? can he walk unaided, or does he need someone with him in case he falls, and cannot get back up again?

What basic things does he have problems with? Can he wash and dress himself? Can he cook a basic meal for himself?

If someone was not with him, is he at risk of harming himself trying to cook or get dressed?

    Who completed his DLA form?

Monthly income after tax................ 750 (New Estimated Figure from 01/10/11)yeah to the extra income, can you do any mystery shopping, surveys, etc to boost your income further.
I'm slowly rebuilding/restarting these - I've joined the £10 a day challenge to try & help with motivation / encouragment / inspiration etc, but it will take time to rebuild the momentum on them again.

Partners monthly income after tax....... 82 (DLA Basic Care Rate) Obviously we don't know what your partners health issues are, but as above could he do surveys, daily clicks, take advantage of free bingo offers, write reviews for a few pence a time? And sorry to ask this but if he gets DLA should he not also be entitltes to Incapacity Benefit or ESA or something as well?
I'm trying to encourage him to try things, but the effects of the stroke make it very hard for him to use keyboard / mouse etc.
According to the DWP type people - apparently he's not "unwell" enough to qualify for it (would probably be put into the work group) but he really is not fit enough mentally or physically to return to work. Also, from what I can understand - it's either WT credit or ESA you can claim for, not both. TBH now I qualify with my hours, it makes more sense to do the WT. But then, my head spins trying to work out the benefits information.

Mortgage................................ 1 (As stated this is on a payment “hold”) When do payments resume? Will you be able to meet them when they restart?
Secured/HP loan repayments.............. 1 (Pending agreement) As above
The Mortgage is a Private one - from a "Mortgage Angel", and I've been given a substantial period in which to "steady myself" before payments will start. Though I intend to try & start putting some funds away before then to try to get a bit ahead when they do start.

I should also just clarify, that the secured loan is actually the negative equity amount I was left with after the sale of my house. There just wasn't another suitable place for it to go on the form. The payments will start once a mutually acceptable repayment amount is reached.

Council tax............................. 105 can you spread this over 12 months if you haven't already? When will you know about getting a benefit for this?
This is the monthly amount  We have an expensive CT area here :( I'm waiting for the information pack & forms to see what exactly they are proposing / offering, as they didnt actually mention it specifically being CT Benefit - the phrase used was reduction

Telephone (land line)................... 30 (combined with broadband)Is this the cheapest you can get?
I doubt I'd be able to switch due to credit record atm, but it does include line rental, broadband and unlimited calls - but I may be able to swap this to their new "basics" plan option, which is slightly cheaper.

Car Insurance........................... 40 This seems pretty high, check when it is due for renewal, and don't forget to change via a cash back site eg quidco, topcashback etc.
Unfortunately, I appear to have an oddball import version which doesn't seem to be listed as an option on the price comparison sites. It's something I will look at again next year - but it's already auto-renewed for this year.

Buildings insurance..................... 50 (Combined House & Contents)This seems very high as well. I think we were paying about half this before we went onto landlords insurance.
I shall look into options on this one, thank you.

    Unsecured Debts
You need the APRs for all of these unless you are in a debt manangement plan? Otherwise you can't target your debt repayment? Sorry ignore that you are obviously are in a plan, I have just noticed the repayment.s
    Duly ignored then :rotfl:

Thanks for all the suggestions, I shall bear them all in mind. Once I've had a chance to get some regular payments logged on my credit report showing consistent payments etc (and maybe even some final settlements where possible) - I'll be in a better position to do so successfully.

Do you know about Approved Foods?

Do you have a store cupboard?

Do you use the printable coupon thread?

    http://www.cheap-family-recipes.org.uk/index.html?opt=p3m1

now you do have to be careful because of Mr GA's diabetes but this will help to reduce your food bill and the food is delicious and nutritious.

    mine is £150 a month unless I pay over 12 months and then £122 a month! my friend's was £200 a month!

please, please, please, have a look at independent companies that cannot be found on comparison sites, Direct Line, Co-operative Insurance, Swintons, etc. and see what they are quoting. If you are not tied into your insurance, ie penalty for cancelling and changing insurance company and can get it cheaper and by dd, please have a go.

I need to add this to be able to quote.

where do you shop? ie sainsburys, morrisons, asda, tesco, co-op, local greengrocers, local butchers, etc.

Suggestion for Mr GA - if he is at home all day by himself, leave the pot mellow, only flush when it is not mellow. This will cut down on the water usage.

Can you get him one of those tv blanket things. Can't think what they are called, but you wear it over the front, has sleeves and reaches to the floor. Is very warm. Leaves you free to move around and do things but keeps you warm. Would save on some of the heating bills.

With your curtains, are they lined? The ones you draw at night? If so, and the lining is thin, you know you can line them with fleece, and this will help keep the heat in the house, and not going out of the window. If you pin the fleece to the curtains, you can take it down when the weather gets warmer.

Do you have a draughty front door? if so, get a fleece curtain to cover it, to keep the heat in and the draughts out, the same with the back door.
  • Aesop - I really need some of whatever it is you're on :rotfl::rotfl:

Gosh, I did one reply and find you've added half a dozen  (okay, so a slight exageration (sp!!!!!) but you get my drift) :rotfl:

Thank you so much for all that information - I will have a proper read tomorrow after work (when my head can actually take it in) and have a look at all of those things.

Yes, I am a co-op member - didnt even think of that :o

I will also answer some of your earlier questions tomorrow here on the thread, as I always think it might help someone else too - but thank you - yes I'd like to pm you with some of the more "personal" bits, if that's ok :)

I feel very guilty having to sign off - but I have an extra early start in the morning, and will need 5 gallons of coffee to kick start me if I don't head bedwards now (as opposed to the normal 2.5 gallons) :p
