I have a large Lidl bag on the left hand side that I keep bread in, I am lucky that mine has two baskets and a compartment too. I still lose stuff in the bottom. I try to use bags for other stuff too but often there is laundry on the top of the freezer so I lift the lid up as far as I can and then poke whatever it is through the gap and hope the lid shuts! :rotfl:

I imagine one could use shopping baskets with handles, plastic storage tubs, cardboard boxes etc.

I have lists, I inventory the freezer all the time, but it doesn't help as I never mark stuff in and out. Full of good intentions though...

Hmm see, I'm worried that baskets or plastic boxes would damage the lining of the freezer? But I nver tought of Bags for Life - they should be loads stronger than normal carrier bags which I find break up in the freezer..

And a list.... great idea - I could put a list inside a plastic folder-sleeve which is taped to the top of the freezer right? As things go in - they are added to the list. As they come out they are scrubbed off. I can then re-do the list when it gets too messy with scrubbings etc

Also with bags (which was a concern with cardboard boxes) the bags get smaller (squashed) as the food is taken out of them, making space for a bag of a different food type, oh excellent! No prizes for guessing what I'm doing this weekend, lol :)

    Thank you guys!

I dont have a big freezer but hoping to get one very soon. How about keeping a spreadsheet on the computer with the freezer contents and update every day/couple of days. You can print it off and put it on your freezer. I saw one the other day that even had the location of the freezer as the person had 3 freezers in the house.

    Hi...

It helps to keep track too... Black or white boards for freezer inventories?

And this older thread has a few suggestions:- Are you a FLOP? Who has the most organised freezer?

I used to use cardboard boxes, but they tend to disintegrate quite quickly, because they get very wet.
So I now use carrier bags and each bag has a list stapled to the handle, so I know what I have in each one, every time I take something out I cross it off the list.
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

i use bags for life too,

    i have

boxes in the bottom for whole animals back from the abbottoir:eek:

    one bag for roasting joints,

one for meat that is to be batch cooked into HM ready meals,

one for fish - i buy stuff reduced and bung in for when non meat eaters turn up

one for indian night stuff ie any onion bhai, samosas i have seen reduced plus HM batch cooked currys, nan breads etc,

one for chinese / thai night stuff, reduced spring rolls, plus leftover rice frozen to make egg fried rice, HM batched cooked thai currys etc

one for italian nights - ie HM batch cooked bolognaise for lasagne or pasta, HM batch cooked pizza bases and any reduced pizza toppings (ham, fish, etc) HM dough balls, garlic breads etc

you get the picture - mine is organised into meal themes using batch cooked HM ready meal ideas..

BUT completely agree that system goes haywire if DH goes to look for fish fingers and tips everything out:mad::mad::mad:

I have 3 freezers :o so am also looking for ways of improving...

the system i have described above is for my freezer in the garage where i try to organise stuff, the small freezer in the house contains easy stuff that i get out to add to a meal, eg frozen veg, quick puddings for the kids ice cream etc,

and i have another freezer i put things in when just taken delivery from the farm / shop where they wait until i sort into bags for life and list for the garage freezer:o

I am embarrassed to admit this is me! 2 chest freezers in garage & fridge/freezer in kitchen. This month am trying to reduce to 1 chest freezer but have just added 7 bags of carrot batons from Mr A that were reduced to 14p (rude to leave them?) :D
    Nice to save.

I have several plastic buckets with lids, spare once I've used the contents (50 seed balls for wild birds). They are not quite as big as a standard bucket, but they are plain white, easy to label and stack, and hold quite a lot. I blanche fresh vegetables when they are in season, then bag them into meal-size portions, then put the bags into the buckets. I do the same with fresh meat when it's portioned up, and leftover meals; everything has its own bucket. It's really easy just to lift one out by its handle, remove what I need, then place it back in the freezer. The lids make sure that everything stays where it should. After lots of experimenting, this is the best method I've found for me.
