Does it actually matter?
What's the difference?
It's brown vinegar thats 19p in Asda and yes, unfortunatly, it does matter. The difference is that brown could leave a stain on things. I use white vinegar as fabric softener in my washer and I don't fancy brown stains on my undiesI use it in the bathroom and I have a pale bath, I have also used it on my cream tiled floor, I don't want to risk staining them.
The brown is great for using in drains and plug holes and on weeds.
I am going to do a links page to the 3 major vinegar usage threads and ask Judi to make it sticky, so have a look and they tell you all about why to use different ones. When life hands you a lemon, make sure you ask for tequilla and salt0 -
chinese supermarkets sell it - or just ask in your local chinese takeaway if they will sell you a big bottle of it0

You're right about the Chinese supermarkets - mine had Sarsons white vinegar at £3.20 for 5 litres today (Pats, Leith Walk, Edinburgh)0

Morrisons have their own label stuff for 35p normal malt and white. Had it on B.O.G.O.F. a while back so managed to stock up.:idea:I got an idea, an idea so smart my head would explode if I even began to know what I was talking about:idea:0

I use brown vinegar for everything except if i am washing whites or pale coloured clothes, then i use the white.Your home is at risk if you do not keep up repayments on a mortgage or other loan secured on it.0 -
Visited London's Chinatown last night and was most disappointed by the lack of cheap vinegar! It seems a lot of the supermarkets there cater more for rich trendies rather than frugal people.
Anyway I ended up with a litre of Phillippino Cane Vinegar for 85p from the Loon Fung supermarket, which wasn't too bad. Seems a shame to spray such exotic stuff on my sink though!'Never keep up with Joneses. Drag them down to your level. It's cheaper.' Quentin Crisp0 -
Don't forget that the vinegar sold by the brands like Sarsons is actually 'brewed' and is always going to be more expensive that the industrial white vinegar that is sold as 'non-brewed condiment'.
I have already mentioned in another thread on this subject that the Loon Fung supermarket do 5ltr containers of concentrated NBC for around £10... I wouldn't recommend putting it undiluted on your chips, but it is the cheapest I've seen.Better to die on your feet than to live on your knees!0 -

Thanks, which branch of Loon Fung is this, I couldn't see this at the London W1 branch. Can the NBC be taken internally/used on the body if diluted or is it non food grade?'Never keep up with Joneses. Drag them down to your level. It's cheaper.' Quentin Crisp0 -

If you've access to a MAKRO and not a Chinese Supermarket then I suggest a visit.
