A 'Lidl' bit disappointed in the search for cheap vinegar

The great cheap vinegar hunt took me yesterday to Lidl in Cricklewood, north London.

What a dump!

Firstly I got lost and had to spend 50p in an internet cafe trying to find the bl00dy place.

Fortunately it didn't cost me any extra on the train because I had a travelcard that day anyway. But the store was crammed with people and there were only about 4 checkouts open.

There were some reasonably good bargains to be had - eg marmalade 33p, conc washing up liquid 27p, but no vinegar!

I ended up waiting ages in a queue, and was entertained by the sight of some Burberry Boys being chucked out for shoplifting (how sad is that - caught shoplifting in Lidl!) and a guy taking an apple, biting into it, then saying to his wife 'no they're not much good' and putting it back on the shelf!

So the hunt for cheap vinegar continues.....

I went to Costco yesterday thinking I could locate a 5L bottle of the stuff. They had malt vinegar for about £1.59 (I think) but I want white as I mainly use it in the wash. I'll have to find a decent greengrocers around here.

Wouldn't they also source the vinegar from the same place though, or have you got more than one local wholesaler?

Has anyone managed to find an online source for large quantities of white vineagr as I'd be interested as I too use rather a lot now since reading these threads but still currently buying small bottles from Tesco :o

We have a local greengrocer who will get it in if you ask for it but it is rather scarce on the ground. I'm about to do a hunt as I need loads for chutney making this year so I'll post back here if I find it in a major store.

I've seen some uses for vinegar, but this takes the biscuit:

I posted earlier on the cleaning thread about my bargain buy yesterday, 5 litres of white vinegar for £1.29, I bought it in Selby which is not too far from Tadcaster, maybe a nice daytrip out, go to the market on a Monday and browse around the abbey. PM me if you want to know where the shop is.
Also I have bought vinegar from Farmfoods which I think is a national chain of shops, they sell 2 x 1 pint bottles for £1.

I bought my 5 ltr drum from Makro, it cost £2.75 but lasted months.

Damn - looks like I might have to go to Tadcaster!

It's frustrating isn't it. As an old-styler I am now getting through loads of vinegar for cleaning, deodorising, washing etc, but all I can find in the shops are little bottles of Sarson's for 85p...the manufacturers obviously assume it is only ever used on chips!

booker cash and carry sell chefs larder distilled vinegar in 5litre flexi jugs for £2.19

the sarsons is quite a bit more but what i ended up with last time - fairly sure it was under £4.00 though and the 5 litres is still going strong and it must have been about september time that I got it.

make friends with your local corner shop and they will get it in for you next time they go if you ask them nicely :) I think its a vat free item so they prob wont mark up too much

or a fave restaurant - even the post office or newsagent would probably help you out as most of them use the local cash and carry for supplies so they will have a card already.

Thanks vanoonoo, never thought about asking my local post office/shop about it. We have a Bookers nearby which I may be able to legitimately get access to, but if not, off to ask the local shop peeps.
