I always take biotin supplements when growing my hair. It improves the condition of your hair and nails so it seems to grow quicker if you know what I mean.

If you often get split ends, then a regular trim will help it along too, but if not go as rarely as you can. To avoid cut-happy hairdressers you might like to try dusting instead:
    http://www.long-healthy-hair-advisor.com/trim-your-own-hair.html

Remember to baby your hair. Don't brush it when wet, avoid heat styling, use a good conditioner (I also love Aussie products) and handle it gently.

I also find it helps to have a number of small goals in mind. Have a look at this article to see what I mean:
    http://www.thehairstyler.com/features/articles/hairstyles/how-to-wear-your-hair-when-growing-it-out-straight-medium

Other that that, play around with your hair and try and enjoy the process. Whenever I got bored I'd try wearing my fringe differently, wearing pretty hair assessories and I loved wearing ponytail/bun extensions when it was long enough to tie back. Provided you get the colour match right, no one will notice except people who wear them as well ;)

Hi, just wanted to add that I agree with other posters not to go too often to have a trim.

I had my hair cut just over 2 years ago to a shoulder length bob and been growing it since (with regular trims) about 10-12 weeks and my hair is just about touching reaching my elbows now... works for me and i colour and straighten my hair as well

    I've been Money Tipped!
I feel your pain. Since I've started going to the salon again my hair doesn't seem to get past a certain length. I go to have it coloured (which costs me a fortune) and the hairdresser recommends I need 'a good trim' every time. When I was colouring my own hair I just went to a walk in salon for a trim when I felt it needed it and I managed to keep it the length I wanted it.

Growth rate of hair and fingernails is also related to general metabolic level.

Things that increase your metabolism will increase the rate at which your hair will grow. Therefore, upping your exercise levels a bit might help. (Assuming you're not an addicted gym-bunny already?)
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

Excellent! They do another article for wavy hair so it's great I got it right first time :p

I got mine from Boots but you should be able to get them from any chemist or large supermarket. They may well be called something like 'hair and nail supplements/vitamins' rather than biotin :)

Do you dye your hair? If so you can measure how much your hair is growing at the roots. If you use lots of heat your hair may be breaking at the ends which can make it seem as though its not growing. If you take good care of your hair, little heat, good conditioning (deep treatments and leave in) you could get away with having small trims 2-3 times a year.

I've been trimming my own for a couple of years now (tired of HD's taking too much off). I use this method
    http://feyeselftrim.livejournal.com/

I've also learned to take really good care of my hair using thelonghaircommunity.com. From not being able to grow hair past my neck (I bleached and used straighteners) I have gone from chin bob to nearly brastrap length hair in 2 years and its looking very slinky and healthy to boot. Might be worth having a quick look over there.

edit: i have tried all sorts of treatments and supplements (like you wouldn't believe) and I've come to the conclusion the only thing that has helped my hair growth is keeping my ends moisturised, healthy and split free.
