I have the slighter older version of this - a God send. I used it for bread, cooked meats etc etc
EDIT - Actually, I have this one and it's on half price sale at the moment ... http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/4228211.htmWhether you think you can or you can’t, you’re probably right ~ Henry Ford0 -
rachbc - think you must be my long lost twin as this was exactly what I was going to suggest and it's not the first time I've just agreed with you!
If you have or can look at in library or friends copy the book economy gastronomy they have a ham recipe in there - obviously for a huge one but could be scaled down but it also suggests other meals that you could do with the ham so could be worth it for that. I often justget one piece of meat for the week and we have several meals off it doing various different things with it so it doesn't get boring. I find you often get better value for money and a nicer piece of meat if you can buy one just that litle bit larger you also get better juices for gravy (beef, chicken or pork) or better stock from boiling it (ham or chicken) which is often another whole meal sorted with just a little bit of leftover meat. Leftovers dishes are virtually always just as fine with frozen as fresh so you on't even have to eat all your leftovers at once.

I do boiled ham a couple of times year at most, but at this time of year the family tradition is to bake hams in dough. The dough is a waste product, but most people I know love it....my husband hangs around in the kitchen drooling when the ham is baked...for the dough as much as the ham...after baking it I stud i with cloves and glaze it under the grill. after its one grand presentation on a plate I slice some and freeze, the rest goes out to the table to be sliced and served with salads or in sandwiches etc.0

Just ordered the slicer from Argos as my old one had given up the ghost last year and I had used it for over 20 years so I thought I would treat myself to a pre-christmas pressie from myself to myself

Hi crux,
As your thread has dropped down the board I've added it to the existing thread where you'll find lots of advice on cooking, slicing and freezing your own ham.

I watched Make do and Mend sometime this week and the guy on it cooked a piece of ham which he then cut up into sandwich style sliced ham.
I would love to do this and as an ex veggie I have no idea what kind of cut I should be looking at!? Could anyone help, I apologise if this is a dumb question.....Aim - BUYING A HOUSE  by November 2013!Saved = 100% on 03/07/12 :j0 -
Ham or gammon joint;)0
-
I bought a couple of gammon joints from the co-op as they were reduced to £2.50 each so were worth experimenting with.
I cooked one in my new pressure cooker for about 30 minutes, let it cool then wrapped tightly in clingfilm, left in the fridge overnight then sliced on my new food slicer.
Made so much sliced ham that I had to freeze half.
Well worth doing again if I can get a decent priced joint of ham/gammon.0 -
Hi Odette,
Any ham or gammon joint works well. Lidl often have good offers. There's lots of advice on these threads that may help:
