You need to boil a gammon joint , you can soak it over night first to get some of the salt out if you wish
I get the occasional ham hock from the butcher to boil , which are very cost effective.0 -

the dry cured is his favourite, but he also likes the honey roast + sugar baked
types.
I've seen a few recipes for 'boiled ham' but they ingredients just say '1 large ham' sorry if i'm being dense but what cut of meat would you ask the butcher for - is it already cooked?0 -
I did this a while ago with a large gammon joint. I soaked it, boiled it and baked it with a honey and mustard glaze to finish off. It was sliced (nice and thin because we've got an electric slicer) and frozen in portions for sandwiches. It lasted several weeks and tasted so much nicer than anything bought at a supermarket.:D
My MIL used to use a clothes boiler to boil her ham, which she sold in her grocery shop!! This was many years ago - there's no way anyone would get away with that now!!GC May £178/£250 NSD0 -
if he likes honey roast ham, then i would try cooking the ham in coke or cherry coke - it gives a lovely flavour

So am I right in thinking that you buy a gammon joint to make ham?
Ham to me is the cooked sandwich stuff but seems a bit confusing that the raw meat is also called ham???0 -

glad this thread was revived...i usually buy my cooked gammon from the butchers.
I always buy 1/2 lb and it is working out around £3.20 a pop.
I will toddle off to Lidl later and buy a gammon joint.:heartpulsOnce a Flylady, always a Flylady:heartpuls0 -
I want to buy a 5kg ham at the butchers but was quoted £60 "Finish each day And be done with it.
You have done what you could.
Some blunders and Absurdities have crept in.
Forget them as soon as you can."
