I normally buy a ham/gammon joint once a fortnight from my butcher. Got one yesturday, 4lb in weight and it cost me £6.80. I put it into a large pan, bring to the boil and then disgard the water to get rid of the scum stuff, refill the pan with water and reboil then simmer for 20-25mins per pound. Coat the skin with honey and finish off in the oven just to crisp up the skin abit. Leave to go cold then slice thinly and wrap. A joint like this last us all week in sarnies and is far more economical that buying pre-cooked/sliced meats.

Lidl are having electric slicers for £29:99 from 18 Sept.
We've had some of each of the turkey, gammon & pork this week. Texture & taste has been fine, even though they came out of the freezer. I'm looking around for a beef joint to add to the stores now too...
I get my names for things from my parents I suppose--I buy a Bacon joint to cook & slice for ham; rashers are what you have with egg but pork rashers are belly slices...mind you, even I wondered why I had to ask for 'green back' when I went shopping at the grocers when I was little, & used to spend ages trying to see where that colour was lol! Looking back now, it's a shame these older terms have disappeared..bit like having a stew made from skirt, & using shepherds for lamb & 'cottage' beef, pies...Full time Carer for Mum; harassed mother of three;loving & loved by two 4-legged babies.

If you cook a lot of meat to use in sandwiches a slicer is worth it's weight in gold and you'll soon recoup the money saved on the cost of buying pre-prepared cold meats.
I have this one and it's great but there are more recommendations in this thread:
slicer recommendations ?
I'd be really interested in peoples thoughts on the lidl one though.

I use an electric knife to thinly slice any joint. You do end up with crumbs but I just add those with some bigger pieces into some mayo and mustard for a sandwich.0

Hi thanks to all who helped on this thread,
I ended up buying a small unsmoked gammon joint on saturday to see how it went. Soaked it first and then changed the water and left it to simmer for about 5 hours........ and magically it turned into ham!!
Sliced it up using a mandoline of all things - which actually worked pretty well! OH was so impressed. Got prob 3 weeks worth of ham for £4.94! ( and OH eats ham every day!) yeay!:T
Next time might try either the cider or coca-cola versions to see if the taste is much different.0 -

i ibrought a little gammon joint ive cooked it and sliced it but theres loads of meat we wont get through this in a week can i freeze some of it ?

Yes that will work well. Cool it and freeze it in pack sized that you will use then just lift out and defrost when you want it.
There's a thread with lots of tips and advice on doing this that should help so I'll add your post to it to keep the suggestions together.
