Oh no! Now I can feel a def trip to Lakeland coming on, going past one this afternoon anyway - dd3 has ham sarnies every day at school, her choice I add! (ds has had cheese sarnies almost every day since he started school, think he'd be fed up with them after 10 years lol!)
I could save loads of money doing this, so long as I freeze the slices before the gannets all find them and eat them!
Off to browse the sarnie filling thread, dd2 and dd3 at least like diff fillings!GC Oct £387.69/£400, GC Nov £312.58/£400, GC Dec £111.87/£4000 -
The gammon from Thriftlady's butcher looks good. I know where I will be shopping this Christmas.0

Not ham I know, but I got a reduced shoulder of pork the other day. It's been roasted, sliced & bagged up into three portions for the freezer & another we're using up now.
I was wondering about those Bernard Matthews...rolled...frozen...meat...jobbies as a potentially cheap source of different cold cuts. Any opinions welcomed, cuz altho I don't think they pass muster as a meat-&-two-veg meat, they could be acceptable wedged between a lettuce leaf & slice of tomatoFull time Carer for Mum; harassed mother of three;loving & loved by two 4-legged babies.

Correct me if I'm wrong but some posts (& therefore prices) are out of date. Can anyone recommend where to buy good value for money gammon joints at the moment?0

Tesco seem to have decent enough gammon joints close to the pre-packed sausages & bacon rashers.
If you look on mysupermarket.co.uk they will give you an indication of price per kilo on both ready-to-eat & the cook-your own. Plus you can also compare the Messers T, S, A & Ocado, which I think is Waitrose?
You can shop online from there too if you wish & someone will be able to tell you who to go through to get points--eg Pigsback, Quidco etc. A useful place to visit, even if--like me--you shop in person, & moreso if you are not restricted to one supermarket.

Scuz me for having another go, but I need to post while I remember
Morrisons today, I found a Bernard Matthews turkey breast joint @ £5:52 per kilo---it was frozen & made from 'reformed & reclaimed meat'. In their chilled fresh meat cabinet, a fresh boned turkey breast joint was £6:69 SIZE=1]I think[/SIZE & I got a boned thigh joint for £4:48 per kilo.
In a bargain outlet place I also got a vacuum packed horseshoe gammon joint @ £3:99 per kilo.
So I guess that, with a bit of homework, we CAN still get premium ham joints to cook & slice ourselves for considerably less than the stuff already done.Full time Carer for Mum; harassed mother of three;loving & loved by two 4-legged babies.

On a theme... I buy the gammon/ham/bacon joints and cut them into thick slices (raw) and freeze. I have one defrosting now - I will cut it into chunks to add to my DHs mushroom, onion and of course gammon omlette for tea. They are ideal if we have leftover pots and veg for a quick meal.
For quick sandwiches don't forget you can also grate cheese and freeze it in a bag or a tub!!! :j0 -
As a quick estimate, I weighed the sliced meats this morning & allowing for the fat, crumbling, fuel, wrappings SIZE=1]foil & plastic bags[/SIZE & cooks perks
there was 500g of turkey & 900g of gammon. This is all meat & no preservatives/added water/ anti-oxo-cubes etc apart from what was in the joint before I cooked it.
So--because I forgot to make a note of the price of each joint--I have allowed a generous £10 to cover outlay, making the meat itself an competitive 71.4p per 100g....I thinkFull time Carer for Mum; harassed mother of three;loving & loved by two 4-legged babies.

OH loves his ham sandwiches - no matter how much ham I buy he eats it all before the end of the week!!! :rotfl:
He prefers the deli counter stuff to the cheaper packets, and I don't really want to feed him them either, as given the amount he eats, the additives + salt can't be good.
Is there a way of making 'deli' like ham at home - i'm thinking maybe it would be cheaper (& healthier) to get a joint of ham and roast it at the weekend ready to carve up over the week... don't really know where to start though.
Anyone done this - what cut of meat do you use, any good recipes, how long does it keep for???
I'm getting a slow-cooker next weekend for my birthday if that helps!0 -
Is the deli counter stuff he has cured or boiled ham?
If its boiled ham then its pretty easy, just type Christmas ham into google and it will give you lots of recipes. Cured ham is much more time consuming and technically more difficult0
