I watched Make do and Mend sometime this week and the guy on it cooked a piece of ham which he then cut up into sandwich style sliced ham.
I would love to do this and as an ex veggie I have no idea what kind of cut I should be looking at!? Could anyone help, I apologise if this is a dumb question.....

Certainly not a dumb question. We all have to learn somewhere. Don't forget to keep the stock from boiling your ham to make the most glorious soup. Definitely my favourite.

Another thread which may be useful - ham hock blah blah blah.
Cheap as chips and get a good enough bit of meat and fab stock - that thread has loads of recipes, but carrot and lentil and ham is my favourite :)

Take the meat off the bone when it's warm, when it's cold it's much harder.

whilst a whole gammon joint is a lot cheaper to make ham with, i sometimes buy from the supermarket those rottiseried ham hocks/gammon hock that comes with a large bone. it's quite meaty and i slice that into strips (can't get proper big slices) and make sarnies out of that. it's all for about £2 odd and lasts about a week or so. sometimes later in the evening, you can find them for 50p each whoospied!
  • Hi Folks,
I do the same get joint, slice it, and put in freezer. I also like to buy packets of ham for a change.
A strategy from my Mum was Value Joints cook with celery, carrots, whole black peppercorns and bay plus onions in slow cooker for few hours. Keep stock for soups (cook lentils in salt free flavoured water for time needed) make soup with stock.
Tesco doing a joint at £4 I brought it, now sliced in freezer.
Now regarding wafer thin slices surely culinary skills are what is needed and knife skills??? Plus I think people are too hung up on the Wafer Thin issue cos the Vast retailers can produce it en masse with the illusion of giving power back to the consumer.

Been watching the recent food programmes & I'm thinking about doing my own ham, after watching the ham one.

    Googled this
    http://!!!!!!ling.com/ham.htm

Anyone else make their own ham?

    How do you do it?

I guess you could buy a small bacon hock & boil & carve that?

Unfortunately the link isn't working for me either. :(

Try this thread for lots of tips and advice on making your own sliced ham:

I'll add this thread to that one later.

  • It looks like the swear filter has been offended by the link! Mrs E can you clarify?

I saw two programmes which showed the industrial ham-making process  and I've not eaten it since. (We have a local butcher who cures them though so I will eat ham again once the horror has worn orf.)
