MSE News: RBS punishes basic account holders in ATM crackdown

see at first I thought it was just a way of them clearing out basic acc holders, but its just a way to try and get ppl to buy their £8 select acc. Everytime u phone now, they go through this spiel about 'offers of products and services', only to then ask u to upgrade to the £8 acc. I told the 1st guy 'no i dont wanna pay for an acc', and he said 'err ur actually paying for the rewards'. HAHAHAHA!
Surely they have current accs without a fee? why is the 'upgrade' to an £8 one rather than the non paying one? RBS act like their bank is paved with gold.
They need to jog on. TWONKS.
There is a full current account without a fee; it's called the Select Account. You are able to apply for it, but it would involve a credit check and a good number of Key/Basic account holders would not be able to get it. Previous bankruptcy is one thing that would guarantee a decline but there are various internal markers that would flag up a decline.
Your choice is then to either be restricted to RBS group machines or pay £8 for the Select Silver. Simple as that.0 -
Changing ? I elaborated, not changed.... apparently you are as unstable as a RBS account LOL
And you had the barefaced cheek to "Report my post", and now you show your true character, with personal insults, so other members will draw their own conclusions on who's post should have been reported, but I will not report your post because I realise that you do not have a clue what you are talking about and I'm sure the MSE staff have better things to do with their time
I have now included your membership name in my ignore list so that I do not need to read any drivel that you post in future, so there would be no point in you replying to this particular post since I will never see it, good luck with your questions. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. I think Bank of Scotland might be in the news regarding this too, as of today their basic account is restricted to Bank of Scotland machines only and I don't beleive there are any in England (maybe still some in London), Wales or Northern Ireland. They make no mention of allowing access to Halifax machines and I assume Halifax has lost the Bank of Scotland branding south of the border as Bank of Scotland has lost Halifax here.0

The BOS say clearly that their cash account (visa debit) doesn't include the ability to use non Bank of Scotland machines.
This may require translating into plain English.

I don't think the Birmingham branch has oneHi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
First Trust Bank has restricted its Basic Bank account cashcard and can only be used in First Trust and AIB ATM's and there are none in England , Scotland or Wales (it is accepted in all UK Post Offices though)

"You can use the cash card to withdraw money from First Trust Bank cash machines and certain First Trust Bank euro cash machines in Northern Ireland and AIB Bank cash machines in the Republic of Ireland. You can also use your cash card to withdraw cash and check the balance of your account, free of charge, at any post office in Northern Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales."
Barclays received a lot of adverse publicity in 1999 over ATM charging, so I would not expect them to take the lead - I would expect them to follow the other banks though

Now that the Basic account is even more restricted in its use, I have to ask what is the difference (overdraft and checkbook notwithstanding) from Select?
Both are 'free' but Select users can pay@pump and get cash at all atm's etc. Why are they not restricted also?
Is this then, just round-one, with an £8-a-month fee waiting to be dumped onto Select users?0 -

Do you by any chance have a list and/or general idea of what flags up a decline? (If Natwest might spank you for revealing then never mind.)0 -
Just wanted to share that I went into Barclays today to close my Basic account as i've been accepted for a current account with Santander.
Made zero effort to keep me as a customer after having the account for over 6 years without ever being overdrawn. I got the cursory "Why do you want to close it?" twice though. I should have said "Does it really matter ?"0
