I've got a fruit fly plague in my kitchen because of a couple of ripe bananas that didn't get made into cake quickly enough. Any advice on how to get rid of them? I'm splatting the ones I can ;) as they are not as quick as other flies, but they are all over my ceiling now.Yuck
I had a plague of these last year and I just hoovered them up! I did this several times a day and after a few days they were gone.
Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it!

sounds lovely...how do you make the crisps? Did they work?

They didn't turn out so great. :( I sliced them really thinly and put them on a griddle pan (or whatever it is with the raised lines on to make it look chargrilled), and cooked it for a while but they just went floppy rather than crisp. The ones that DID go crisp went black and charcoaly - blech!

I've heard you can buy a microwave crisp maker (although I might try making some on a baking sheet next time I've a spare shelf in the oven) - not sure how good these are though. A little salt over them while they're still hot and they should be tasty. :)
  • Hi guys, wonder if anyone can help. We are making a concerted effort to use up all of the stuff in our organic fruit and veg box as that's were most of it gets wasted. My OH has just shelled the broad beans and put them in the fridge and asked me if they should be in water. You couldn't pay me enough to eat any kind of beans so I have no idea!

    Anyone know?

    Thanks

I had an epic cooking session today. I am having a dinner party on thursday so I peeled and removed the seeds from a load of reduced organic tomatoes and roasted them in the oven with some fresh basil and garlic oil. I made little meringues. I used an on-the-way-out banana to make a yummy banana loaf. I made truffle mixture to be rolled into balls tomorrow night. I then cooked up some aubergine, pepper, tomato and beetroot in little cubes that I am going to make into a relish, I took half of the veg mix, added some microwave rice and the yolks from the meringues, some cream from the truffle and made the weirdest omelette in the world, it went pink too from the beetroot, tasted good though :)

I was finding I had a lot left from my beg box so went from having veg one week and fruit the next to having a larger mixed box each fortnight, seems to work out better, though I still have some spring greens I don't want to have to eat...

When he's done that, empty the remaining bit into a margarine tub with a lid and freeze for another time.

Thanks for that tip, that's a really useful idea.

Have to confess that last night I found a bag of peaches that had gone really mouldy. To be honest they were past their best when I bought them, the man on the market told me to eat them up within a couple of days, but we had so much other fruit they got left. The moral of that is it's not a such a bargain if I'm not going to use it straightaway.

Hi, When pre-preparing vegetables, anything which grows below ground is kept in water, anything that grows above ground is kept dry.

Well I had to throw another few strawberries- upped total to £2.70 to include this. Still quite pleased with how we have been getting on, saving money and making sure we eat what we can instead of disposing of. Biggest prob is DS, as he is only 1 he sometimes does not eat all we give him and so makes a little waste- I try my best to give him a portion he will hopefully eat and not too much, so that any not eaten can be re-used another day, or more offered if he seems hungry.

Well I did my "usual" when cooking spuds for mashing tonight and cooked double quantity so half are now in the freezer in an old takeaway container. I find I usually buy potatoes in a 1.5kg bag which is too much for the two of us to get through beforem they sprout - by cooking and freezing mash I can get away without buying potatoes every week, and the few from the veg box fill the gap nicely.

I've still got a big chunk of that marrow to use up.... will have to come up with semething inventive to do with it!! OH tells me that there's a good few more of the OOD jellies in the cupboard too so that'll save on buying puddings for a while! :D

Well I am proud to say the honest food waste total for June was £2.70, which I think is quite good for my first attempt :D !
Am aiming for even less in July, although it is a 5 week month, and I have already dented the total with 49p  - a mango I bought to make DS mango for pudding went all black- right through!
I got two more reduced mangoes today and immediately softened them up with some pear and froze in little batches. I WILL NOT LET MANGO GO YUCKY AGAIN   !!
Thanks to OP for starting this thread and to all those who have provided tips along the way :T :T .
Lets all do the best we can.
