Kippers, thanks for such a great thread - it has really focussed my shopping and cooking. We had pancakes for pudding tonight from left over yorkshire pud mix from yesterday's roast.

I will join in too.
I am always throwing out food, mainly fridge stuff. Milk, salad stuff, etc.
Its a shame to waste it all. I buy food with intentions of making a nice salad on x night etc but then after I have had a rubbish day at work and worked late by the time I get home I cant be bothered!Baby Ice arrived 17th April 2011. Tired.com! :j0 -
i had some mushrooms to use up so i made my lentil pie with the left over lentil bolagnaise sauce from the freezer and i chopped the mushrooms and layered over the lentil mix before topping with mash (using up potatoes that needed using) it made much more than it would have and the mushrooms cooked down in the sauce. not only did i use up some food that would have been wasted otherwise but i also had enough left to heat up at work for my lunch the today.Dogs return to eat their vomit, just as fools repeat their foolishness. I've been reading my way through this thread for the past couple of days - I am so with you guys on this challenge!
Yesterday I sorted out all the ageing veggies from the fridge and did a veggie bake with the rest of a carton of Lidl passata poured over and grated cheese on the top - very yummy and a good way to use up some soft-ish mushrooms, a slightly wrinkly aubergine, a bit of a marrow and several yellow peppers (the Tesco Value bags ONLY had yellow in this week!). Tonight was a stir fry with some more elderly veggies - the last bit of marrow (it's contributed to four meals now - impressive or what!), a couple of onions which once I'd removed the manky outer layers were fine inside, some more of those yellow peppers, mushrooms and the last of the pak choi from a fortnight ago's veg box. Added to that was some turkey strips from the freezer, and a sachet of chinese black bean sauce from the back of the larder. Tomorrow will be a beef curry using up more veggies, a nice piece of beef skirt from the freezer, the last of my home made gree thai curry paste and storecupboard spices, rice etc.
The aim for our next shop, is to just buy milk, fruit & veg - we shouldn't need anything much else, and next week is a veg box week anyway so hopefully not even too much veg needed. I have plenty in the freezer - it;s just a case of working out what meals I can make from it!

Chop an onion and soften in a little vegetable (rape-seed) oil. DH also sometimes adds a little balsamic vinegar. The onion just needs to be soft.
Then break 4 eggs into the pan and mix as you go. Add salt and pepper to taste.
Serve on wholemeal bread or toast.

I've just mentioned this to my DH and he is going to make himself some for lunch.

Morning all.
Yesterday we used up the last of an iceberg lettuce we had. I've got 3 yoghurts to use before the 25th...i must eat them.
I went out last night with friends i don't see very often and felt very proud of myself . They were discussing how much they spent on food and the amounts were unbelievable! I asked if they throw much away and i was shocked when they admitted how much they throw away.
Today i'm going down my allotment to pick some more spinach to use and i'm hoping my first runner beans are ready to pick (yum yum).
I've got some cornflake cakes to make also.
I bought a 31b loaf tin and used it for the first time this week (as i've not been happy for a while with how my MR breadmaker cooks the bread). the bread was lovely.
By the way, does anyone know how to make croutons for soup?
Have a good day all0 -
Hi kippers.
You are doing brilliently !!!
I always thought that croutons were bread that had bee toasted with a little olive oil and maybe a bit of garlic rubbed on ???

not really sure whether this should go on this thread but here goes.......
I was given a couple of large jars of freeze-dried coffee but we don't use a lot and when I buy a jar, I get the 100gm size so it doesn't get too stale.
Well one of the jars I gave to charity event and I thought to myself if you can freeze coffee beans, what about instant ? So the other, I divided into 5 bags and popped them in the freezer. It worked fine - I just refilled the jar with the contents from the bag and was really chuffed with myself.
You often get special offers with the large or catering size jars which work out so much cheaper than several smaller ones.........so instead of me perhaps, throwing away what would have been left at the bottom of the jar, I know that I can save myself money by freezing it.
And I've kept the bags too in readiness for my bargains0 -
Does anybody have any ideas as to what I could make with a large quantity of ready brek? My DD used to like it but it got overlooked when she left to go to uni (err she finished uni yesterday (after 3 years!), so I am guessing it's a bit elderly to eat without being transformed into something else!).
thanks0
