Hi,
I have been away but am back & have found this thread. Really good challenge, and one I need to join!
I had some gammon steaks in the freezer and they were defrosted on Thursday evening. The have been in the fridge since and are still in their vacume pack. Do you think they will be OK to eat? If so any suggestions other than Gammon & Egg/Pineapple?!
Many Thanks

Sharon - I make the first batch of yoghurt up in my EasiYo flask and the next two batches I make up using 2 - 3 tablespoons of the existing yoghurt plus UHT milk at room temperature. (After that it's best to start with a completely new culture). I tried making subsequent batches up with both Skimmed and Semi skimmed milk and existing yoghurt and it just curdled and separated out. I've read that skimmed or semi skimmed milk should be gently warmed first, which I did, so obviously something went wrong. Since then I always use UHT milk which works perfectly fine with culture from the previous batch, and I freeze the leftover UHT milk for future use. I guess if you didn't want to buy the Easiyo powder sachets you could start off a new batch of yoghurt with a small carton of shop natural yoghurt and UHT milk. I haven't tried this yet but plan to do so next time I want to make up a batch. I don't normally use UHT milk but now always keep a couple of cartons in the cupboard for yoghurt making.
Thanks Primrose, may have to look into this and have a go at making some.
We don't eat much of it though so it may not be worthwile but I think I will try some.0 -

Can you freeze natural yoghurt? I have two cartons in the fridge with only one day left.
Many thanksLife may not be the party we hoped for, but while we're here we should dance....0 -
wouldn't think so. But you could use it up in cooking i.e yogurt cake and in any case it will keep past its sell by date. Do you like museli with yogurt instead of milk? Dips etcGrocery challenge june £300/ £211-50.

Good thinking, I will use it up on my museli. One question though, what is the frozen yoghurt they sell in restaurants?Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we're here we should dance....0

Hi Kippers
Yes, could you please give me the recipe for your banana bread please?
Ta.
Sharon
It's banana cake (not bread) hope that's ok.
125g butter or marg
250ml white sugar (ml not mg)
4 ripe bananas mashed
2 eggs
250g s/r flour
tsp baking powder slightly heaped
a drop of water
100g Sultana's (optional)
Cream butter & sugar
Stir in bananas
Beat eggs in one at a time
Sift flour & baking powder then mix well
Add a little water & mix (until it drops of wooden spoon easily)
Pour into greased loaf tin
Cook at Gas 4 for approx 45 mins
(I usually split the ingredients in half and make two cakes and cool and slice and freeze the slices before anyone gets to eat the second one).
By the way i put butter on each slice and its lovely but my DD's have it without0 -
Cauliflower stalks: As somebody else has mentioned, they're good sliced up matchstick size and use in stir fries. I also store the stalks in the vegetable tray, chop them up and cook them with other vegetables. They're also good raw and thinly sliced, mixed in with a home-made coleslaw, or mixed up with pasta and peas and served with a cheesy sauce. It always seems such a waste when you see piles of them just thrown away on market stalls. I'm always tempted to ask the stallholders if I can take some for my (non-existent) rabbits !0
