Those little bags you get in boxes of washing powder tablets are great for cramming a nice pair of smalls in or tights and then they wash just as well but without risk of snagging - also good for socks.......

I hear that some people fill them full of bird seed and hang them out for the tweeties.

  • Will definitely be going back and reading more of this thread, great stuff. There's a wierd kind of pleasure to be had in making something delicious out of leftovers!

Tonight for tea I made lasagne, using an onion and some garlic that were in the fridge getting a bit past their best, beef mince I've had in the freezer for aaaages and as an experiment, I added some sausage - bought them for sausage butties for my OH but he didn't like them, even tho they're a well-known brand... just not the one I usually buy!

Just took the sausage meat out of the skins and browned it with the mince, then followed my usual recipe - which is basically to add chopped onion, garlic, tinned tomatoes, grated carrot, mixed herbs, chilli powder, tomato puree and a tin of tomato soup (the secret ingredient - gives it a lovely sweetness!), simmer for 20 mins then layer with lasagne sheets and top with a jar of white sauce and grated cheese. Put in the oven for an hour at about gas 6 and voila!

Oh, I also used up some cheese leftover from Xmas in mine tonight - sliced brie layered with the sauce and pasta, with red Leicester and white cheddar grated on top. It looked and tasted gorgeous - might make one using just sausage meat next time instead of mince, worked really well, I'd recommend it to any other lasagne lovers out there!
    ;)

I put a spicy lentil and tomato soup on today, but got chatting on the phone and forgot about it and the bottom burnt a bit.I tasted it and it did taste a bit burnt, so i chucked some mushrooms, garlic , onion and a pack of savoury rice in, simmered it, and it's made a kind of risotto thing:D:D
Really delish too, and will freeze for about 5 meals:j:j

Just discovered this thread, just what I need. I'm trying to work my way through the pages although it looks like it will take several days.
I always freeze leftovers: gravey, stock, carcasses to make stock later, bits of fruit, bread, milk etc but I'm not that good at labelling them. January/February is always a time when I have a 'leftover months'. Two bags of 'leftovers' are taken out of the freezer in the morning and depending on what they are I work the meals for the day around them, be it soup, stew, potted meat etc. Sounds like a fool proof method!!! but the other day we ended up with gooseberries in a stew. I thought they were baby onions as they hadn't quite thawed out when I added them to the meat and veg.

    Potted meat, very easy,
Leftover cold meat - don't need much.
Fry a small amount of onion,
    nutmeg, salt and pepper.
Put it all in a blender and whizz with something to stick it together. I've used butter or cream and even mayonaise.
if you want to be posh, you can put it in a ramikin and add melted butter on the top and serve it like 'pate' but straight from the blender it's great on toast, or in sandwiches.

These leftover months do help with the budget as it cuts my grocery bills down to mainly fresh veg and fruit and it also means I sort out the freezers as well as clearing a space.
  • Very rarely have lamb but had a lovely roasted leg today. I have loads leftover & thought that tomorrow I would make a lamb hotpot thing but what else can I do? I think that there will still be lots left after that!

Hello Sally. I would probably make a lamb curry or a shepherds pie!
