I've only ever used Quorn once and was very unimpressed with it. Maybe if you crumble an Oxo cube over it as you're frying it, it will brown and develop more of a beefy taste.
Got to say I used to be a vegetarian and have tried a lot of vegeterian options over the years. Never ever enjoyed quorn in any form though :o , or tofu for that matter :o . Preferred the actual veg instead of the protein/meat substitutes. I'd be inclined to use it to make a chilli or a strong tasting spag bol as I think it needs some taste added to it. hth
On the using up front, tomorrows dinner for me is chicken curry leftover from fri (made with Lidl Jalfrezi sauce, mmmmmmmm), with two potatoes and a cauli added. Will make a couple of chipatis (sp ?) to go although not sure what DS will have. DH is out for tea.

  • I have a dilemma - I had to throw out some avocados this week that were mush! But they had to be thrown out while I was unpacking the Tesco delivery. I have rung up and they have refunded me the £1.49 as only 1/2 of the 4 were usable. Does this count as food waste? I feel like it is, but not my fault! Hmmm, maybe I'll put it in my sig but put that it was refunded!

Does anyone know if creme fraiche (full fat version) would freeze OK? Ta! Now found the answer to this - aparently it does!

We've had to lose two coconuts that were bought ages ago as OH was going to grate the flesh to freeze - we often do this and it adds something extrmeley special to curries etc - when he cracked them open last night though they had been there so long they'd gone disgusting, apparently. Bit cross about that as I've been asking him to get on and deal with them (They're too hard for me to grate, but he copes with them fine) for ages! Also the punnet of cress he bought on Friday night had gone over by today - never known it to be over tht quickly before but no point in taking it back as would cost more in diesel than the 24p it cost!

We have however just divided up for freezing the farmers market stuff from yesterday morning - we can't make next months so the freezer has to cope for 8 weeks now!

I've got my seed packet out (lapsed enthusiasm) again and am growing cress on the window sil.

you can use up old mashed avocados as a facepack - smooth it on for 10 mins, then wash off. Or as a hair conditioner - same thing really, cover wet head for 10 mins, then rinse off.

Any ideas for a packet of frozen quorn mince left by a fomer Vegetarian lodger? Do I simply treat it as ordinary mince, or should I cook it in a particular way (with a tast stock in a casserole?) to make it taste better?

it takes nowhere the same length of time to cook though. I usually fry & soften my onions, celery, tomatoes & mushrooms first, leave simmering in stock or wine or whatever for 10 mins, then put in quorn and finish cooking. If you cook it for too long, it goes rubbery - just follow instructions from packet :)

Looks like I threw them out too early then - thanks for that, I'll try it next time. But the 2 I threw straight out felt like they were liquid inside and and the one I opened was all brown and I'm not sure I'd want to smear it on my face! Hair would be a go though!

I love having Quorn mince in a tomato-based sauce with any pasta. You could add onion, garlic, carrots, red/green peppers, a bit of chilli, aubergine..... Oh I'm getting hungry just thinking about it!

I have a bag of salad (it was going to be taken away with me on our girls weekend away but then one of the others had something similar) sitting in the fridge, so am going to have that tomorrow for lunch instead of a sandwich. That has the added advantage of meaning we get an extra day out of the loaf too. OH will have half a tin of tuna in his sandwich and I will have the other half with the salad. Liver, bacon & onions for dinner tomorrow night with the potatoes from the veg box - any extra potato that we don't need for tomorrow will be mashed and go into the freezer. rest of the week is all planned out as well.

Used up half a loaf that would have got thrown away tonight - part into breadcrumbs for coating the fish we had tonight, and the remainder into croutons and then frozen in boxes.

I have to shop early this week as we are away again over the weekend - it will at least mean I can get something to take with us on friday evening to save having to buy food.
