I'm originally from Whitley Bay (on the coast) and it is very family orientated, 20 minutes on the metro from Newcastle central and very well-to-do. Whitley Bay centre is obviously a draw for stag/hen do's but further along towards Monkseaton and the lighthouse it's lovely. Tynemouth is also lovely.
Stay away from North Shields/Meadowell/Percy Main/Wallsend/Walker/Byker and other areas down by the Tyne. Some nice 'niche' areas but on the whole, awful.
Fenham/High Heaton nice, central Newcastle areas. Elswick/Benwell etc NOOOOOOOO!!! (PS I think PJ from PJ and Duncan is from Elswick). Anywhere between West Gate Road and Scotswood Road, very 'multicultural' and rough as....
I went to college in North Shields, my Mum was brought up there and most of the family still live there. It really isnt all that bad. Yes there are some dodgy bits but dont tar it all with the same brush. Fenham is NOT nice! I went to school there and there is vast parts of it I wouldnt walk through after dark!!
Far as I remember Ant McPartlin is actually from Fenham - he lived quite near my school and went to Rutherford School. You may be thinking of Declan Donnelly - he is from Cruddas Park. (His family home for years was next door to my late Auntie and Uncle)
TUS - I grew up in Cowgate and from what I hear there isnt that much of it left!
My brother lives near the Quayside and its quite nice down there, not cheap though.
Best mate lives out towards the Airport, Brunswick/Dinnington area. Some lovely countryside but literally the middle of nowhere.
Im thinking probably Gosforth/Kingston Park is your best bet. Kingston Park has (or it used to be, I dont know if it still is) the biggest Tesco Extra in Europe*The RK and FF fan club* #Family*Don’t Be Bitter- Glitter!* #LotsOfLove ‘Darling you’re my blood, you have my heartbeat’ Dad 20.02.200 -

A lad died the other month there though
What I do hate on the metro are the pictures of dead people for st johns ambulance, I think its a step too far.1,2 & 5p: Christmas day food £9.31

I'd recommend South Shields if you want somewhere a little outside of Newcastle. Probably more recently known as being where Joe from the Xfactor came from. It's not in Newcastle (in spite what said show kept saying!) But it's close enough and has some gorgeous areas to live in near the coast. A lot of areas have a nice village feel and it is close to most of the major North Eastern destinations (Sunderland, Durham, etc.) It takes about 50mins to get to Newcastle on a bus that goes all over the place, so would be a lot quicker by car.
I too have to say I wouldn't recommend the Metro. Been living near one all my life and wouldn't use it if I was paid to, had far too many dodgy experiences.1,2 & 5p: Christmas day food £9.31

Yes, but I cannot post them here!!!It's a huge council estate near Westerhope, I'm sure there are nice bits there but.....................!!!! There is a huge police station (Etal Lane) in the middle of it!
Have you gone on Google Earth street view? This would give you some idea of the areas and surrounding.
