I highly recommend High Heaton/Benton - fair price brackets and ideal for families. I would say that though, it's where I live ;-) Around the Freeman is very nice.

I have previously lived in Sandyford and Jesmond and both are definitely student areas - so don't even bother looking there. Heaton itself is OK, but again very rammed with students and not too kid friendly IMO. High Heaton is totally different.

Forest Hall is also a very good bet.

    Gosforth will be quite expensive.

Kingston Park is a nice area - smaller houses but very family suitable and convenient.

Avoid Wallsend and MOST of Walker. I say most, as most of it (around Walker Road) isn't great. But there are nicer parts on the fringes. Walkergate/Walkerdene/Walkerville are all very nice. I lived in Walkerdene previously and liked it very much.

    Don't bother with Fenham/Cowgate.

Leave the coastal areas for nice days out - my father in law lived in Whitley Bay and I couldn't deal with the weather there. Surprising how different it is to further inland.

Oh and forget south of the river, haha.

That's exactly what I've realised in my search for a house! Very good advice.

Mrs Ryan, I agree with you about Kingston Pk, but my only real problem with it is that there isn't a metro and I've lived near a metro for the past 26 years. Too used to it now to give it up.

Huh? Kingston Park has its own metro next to Tesco's ... and Kenton Bank has one @ Bank Foot. Both very close to all parts of Kingston Park!

Depends on how much your willing to pay, somebody mentioned Whitley Bay but it's not as nice there as it used to be unless you can get near the Monkseaton side. Heaton has good parts but it also has a lot of student accommodation.

Basically like anywhere else there are good and bad areas, whatever houses you look at take a good look at the condition of the other houses in the same street/area.

Ponteland is 'the' place to live but unless your partner is a footballer it'll probably be to expensive.

If you want somewhere quiet and don't mind a commute then Northumberland might be a better choice.

If your on a tighter budget then North Shields is close to the metro and there are some nice houses out of the town centre.

I'm sure the right place is there for you, just have a good look. If you see anything online that interests you, post it on here and I'll do my best to tell you what I know of the area.

It depends a lot on exactly where you are working and how rural you want to be, really. Do you want a town environment or do you want lots of walks, gardens, allotments and places where kids still have the freedom to roam in safety right on your doorstep?

I moved from London to the North East a couple of years ago and haven't regretted it at all. I live in the mineral valleys (Stanley/Consett area). It is stunningly beautiful and there is unbelievable amounts of access to the fells and river valleys. Some parts are regarded as a bit rough, but don't forget that rough in the north and rough in London are 2 very different things. :D

Rowlands Gill, Lanchester, Shotley Bridge, Beamish, Tanfield Lea are all worth a look. The western Derwent and Wear valleys are full of lovely places to live, give them an explore.
Me too! I love it up here surrounded by countryside (I'm a hop & a skip from the C2C cycle track) but only about 15-20 minutes away from Durham or Newcastle. Cheap house prices too, you can get a decent 3/4 bed terrace for about 70-80k, I've just had a quick look and there's a couple of 3 beds that need a bit of work done for less than 50k! 3/4 bed detached new builds are around the 125k mark.

I'd reccommend living in a smaller village near to/just outside Durham (depending on if you can drive!)

I work in North Shields and hate the place! But I live in a village just off the A19, it has an excellent link to the motorway north or south and I've lived here all my life and love it. Durham is lovely on bank holidays and when the sun is shining so I'd say consider somewhere a bit further out than Newcastle, but that just may be me who is 27 and loves the quiet life already!
  • I live in a village just off the A691 about 5 miles outside of Durham and love it in the mineral valley area, got a few shops with the Arnison Centre not that far away for big supermarket shop, and the metro centre is only about 20 mins drive. I have to admit ive never yet been into newcastle properly (only twice in the 3 years ive lived down here) as i pretty much get all i need from the metrocentre and online shopping.

I got assaulted on a Metro station in Jesmond of all places (forget which of the stations it was - the one nearer the baths as opposed to near the schools down the bottom end). Good and bad everywhere really -hell I can't judge, I grew up in Pennywell!
Wahay, another Pennyweller here, lovely estate when I grew up there:A.
