Jesmond - but v expensive as this is where "posh" students go

Heaton - also a student area but High Heaton or areas towards Byker have a lot of families and was a cheaper but just as nice alternative when I was there.

Kingston Park etc - further out of the centre but on the good metro system.

I moved away from there 3 years ago though so someone from Geordieland may come on with better advice!!

Do you have family, are you a couple, what kind of house are you thinking x

    I've been Money Tipped!
Jesmond as advised and also Gosforth.
Near the coast, Monkseaton, Whitley Bay (certain areas) and Tynemouth.
Wallsend (again certain areas), but to a lesser degree than above.

Are you looking to buy or rent??

Jesmond can be a mix of arrogant students and very very wet upper-middle class mothers of the "Oliver, I know you're expressing yourself and being delightful, but please consider not climbing on the supermarket shelves darling" ilk. Used to work there - its increasingly being colonised by some very very "rah" students now though.

To be honest - the Metro is that good as long as you're nearish a station you're pretty much golden to get anywhere right the way from Shields down into Sunderland on the system.

Can't advise more than that - my proud Mackem heritage will never allow me to live within an NE postcode :D

I would say Heaton then unless it has changed dramatically since I was last there

How come you are moving how exciting!

I spent part of my childhood in Gosforth. I would say that is a nice place to live with a good choice of houses and a good quality of life. It is probably one of the more expensive parts of Newcastle though. Brunton and Melton Park used to be considered the more upmarket parts of Gosforth but I'm not sure if that is still the case.

Then it's odds on Jesmond will be too expensive!! The Coast areas are nice, (Whitley Bay, Cullercoats, Tynemouth) and you get the best of both worlds - near to the city (20/25 mins on the Metro) and near the lovely beaches. And it has a more "country" feel than the areas being mentioned. Where ever you go, you'll love it up here :)

If you're looking for something quieter how about going a few miles into Northumberland to somewhere like Prudhoe, Riding Mill, Stocksfield or Hexham? They're all only a short ride on the train to Newcastle. I grew up in Hexham and love it, it's really nice place to raise kids and you could rent a 3 bed in Hexham for the price of a small studio flat in London!

My son lives & works in London and plans on coming back to the North-East in about 5 years time, he's hoping to live in Hexham or one of the neighbouring towns/villages and do the short train journey into Newcastle for work.

Durham is a good suggestion, lovely city but much smaller than Newcastle and only a 10-15 minute train away if you do need to go into Newcastle.
