Also, as stated on The Register today (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/02/12/cheap_vista_for_everyone/) Microsoft has quietly admitted that anyone can buy the upgrade version of Windows Vista, even if they don't have an existing copy of Windows XP on their system. This includes anyone who only runs Linux, or who still runs old version of Windows, such as 95 or ME (perish the thought).

Basically, don't register or activate Vista until it's finished installing, and it won't ask for evidence of the existing version of Windows. You might be concerned about the legality of the license, and I'd be wary of doing it on business PCs, but if Microsoft is saying it's fine, then who are we to argue? The upgrade version is much cheaper than the full version (£120 in the case of the Ultimate edition).

    Cheers,
    Steve
  • Mega PCs where I work is a Microsoft partner and we've been told that we can ONLY sell Vista OEM with a new hard drive, motherboard or new system.
Anything else and we'll get !!!!!slapped!
Overclockers got into hot water with MS for shipping before the release date.

Personally from what I've seen its a nice OS, very Mac-like but it'll take a while, like XP did initially to catch on.

I still get people using 98, ME and 2000 asking if Windows XP is OK to use now cos it was 'a bit funny' when it came out.

Just read that myself and was about to post the same info. It's a nice loophole.

When you buy from 'Overclockers', what do you get? Is it just the disk, or does it come in a box etc?

And does it come with a product key?

for an oem version you get the disk in a plain dvd box with the booklet and product key sticker.

this is security sealed and also it is placed in a cardboard case that is also security sealed as well.

i got mine from there as well as all my other computer stuff.

    i can recommend them 100%

    hope this helps

I usually drive up to them as its only 20 mins from where i live.
however, i know people who do have their stuff delivered and its with them within 2 days.
orders are usually despatched the same day and i think they now have a tracking facility too.

Will the OEM 32 bit version give you the option to upgrade over Windows XP or does it only let you do a fresh install of the OS? thanks
What options does it give you when you boot the CD?
