do women really care if a tiny bit of flesh is seen by passers by? its hardly a 'private' area as only a little skin that you would show on a night out will be seen anyway? surely?!

Sadly, Dave, yes, most women do feel incredibly exposed when breastfeeding in public at first. It's mainly because we don;t see many women doing it, it's not something we grow up with in this country, and also in the first few weeks you tend to need to get your whole boob out to get baby latched on!
After a while you can do it much more discreetly, but at first women do feel very scared of doing it in public.
And when they reach the distractible stage they often pop off leaving you exposed. I also remember a time when DD fell asleep at the breast and came off - I didn;t realise for a good ten seconds, during which time I'd been sat in a cafe with my nipple on full show! :rotfl:
But it's nice to hear a man's perspective as often our fears are more in our heads than reality.:cool: DFW Nerd Club member 023...DFD 9.2.2007 :cool::heartpuls married 21 6 08 :A Angel babies' birth dates 3.10.08 * 4.3.11 * 11.11.11 * 17.3.12 * 2.7.12 :heart2: My live baby's birth date 22 7 09 :heart2: I'm due another baby at the end of July 2014! :j

Well some women do and some women don't. Some women don't like to show much on a night out either. Everyone is different. Some women choose not to breastfeed in public at all. There aren't any rules about it, it's just important to feel as relaxed and comfortable as possible for breastfeeding to be successful [so to speak] and there are probably some mothers who wouldn't have breastfed as much without a breastfeeding cover.do women really care if a tiny bit of flesh is seen by passers by? its hardly a 'private' area as only a little skin that you would show on a night out will be seen anyway? surely?!

I am breastfeeding my second child, and gained huge confidence when a friend sitting opposite me told me she thought I was just cuddling baby, had no idea I was breastfeeding... I swear by BOOB label tops, they're a bit boring but SO discreet. With my first child I used muslin tucked into bra strap as well, but now all dignity has been lost I don't use it any more ;-) Too 'faffy', and more obvious.
Suggest looking on ebay for 'nursing' or 'breastfeeding tops'. In theory you only need 4 or so...but if you're planning to breastfeed for long, you may need a wider wardrobe selection to make you feel a bit more like a woman!
The other brand I liked were the MamaFeelGood double layer longsleeved tops.
Best of luck!0 -

I have a whole separate breastfeeding wardrobe. I only fairly recently started wearing non-BF clothes, so for over 18 months needed Bf outfits, and definitely needed more than a few vests lol. I found tops were great as they go with different bottoms and feel like a different outfit.:cool: DFW Nerd Club member 023...DFD 9.2.2007 :cool::heartpuls married 21 6 08 :A Angel babies' birth dates 3.10.08 * 4.3.11 * 11.11.11 * 17.3.12 * 2.7.12 :heart2: My live baby's birth date 22 7 09 :heart2: I'm due another baby at the end of July 2014! :j

I had this one http://www.johnlewis.com/231024501/Product.aspx?source=63258
and I loved it. I could see the baby, I liked the design, it was easy to pack away into nothing and best of all I was completely covered, so no one could see anything. I don't care what other people say, I breastfed two children and never ever got comfortable with the idea of just whipping them out. Admittedly I am quite large chested so this could have been a factor too. Good on OP's daughter for wanting to give breastfeeding a go, it's bad enough the amount of bullying there is on mothers to try it in the first place, is it really being taken to the next level where women are going to be bullied about how they breastfeed, as if one way is better than another!0 -
I have one of these http://www.next.co.uk/x482260s3#740597x48 the buttons don't undo on this but you move the material towards your chest and there is a 'hole' so you can unclip your bra and pop your boob out basically! Mothercare etc sell similar type tops. These I like as they are long too.
Another fav top of mine is just a basic top with buttons on which i undo to a point i can feed.
I also had a breastfeeding 'cape' which I slung over me so no-one could see anything at all. There was a large gap near my neck so baby could see out. I used it until I felt comfy feeding, it wasn't long and helped me feel happy about feeding out.

Haven't read all the replies but I used to wear a vest top under a looser top as this means you can pull one top down and lift one up. The vest covers your tummy and the looser top over means little is revealed. I have fed a 2 year old like this without showing anything in public. I only bought one 'breastfeeding top' but didn't wear it much for feeding as my other way was better and I felt more comfy.
