I would definitely recommend some proper breastfeeding tops. NOT Mothercare which are awful, but look online: abeautifulmummy, milkchic, bellamama and scrummymummy all spring to mind and are in my favourites.

They are not cheap but will last and look good, and not show too much flesh.

Emma Jane do some great breastfeeding vests which you cna wear over a bra if needed, and under clothes like cardis or wrap tops and dresses, for easy access.

I never used a cover as my DD hated being covered and I never felt he need, but a cheap way of testing out if it works for your DD would be to get a large square scarf, tie two corners at the back of the neck, then either tuck the other corners around her and baby, or if it's big enough tie at the waist. SHe could make one in colours she likes.

She may well find that she doesn;t want to use a cover after the first few times feeding in public, so I'd not buy one until she is sure she wants one - I don't know anyone who used one, even though we have all felt very exposed feeding out and about in the first few weeks. Her confidence will grow very quickly so she may find she doesn;t need or want one in the end.

i was not hostile and i dont think my opinion was unnecessary. i was simply giving my view, experience and opinion. dont like people giving opinions dont ask for them!

frankly i find you rude so shame on you! there really is no need to be so nasty towards people trying to help!

The thread is called "Breast feeding cover-ups" and the opening line is "My DD wants to buy a breast feeding cover up for a bit of extra privacy when breast feeding"

Your reply to this started with a telling off "i HATED the idea of putting something over my baby while feeding! how would you like someone shoving a blanket or whatever over your head while you were eating? eyecontact while feeding a baby is the earliest form of communication and bonding between mother and babay and putting something over the baby while he/she feeds to me is horrible"

To be fair to the OP they didnt want opinions over the rights and wrongs of using a cover up, you may well have experience about that but this isnt the place to share them. Your post made me cringe, you werent trying to "help" the OP find the right cover-up for their daughter rather more talk them out of it !

OP, I will be keeping an eye on this thread, first time round for me I had endless trouble and in the end didnt go out unless I could time my trip to fit around the feeding (be it in a car, Mothercare or a toilet if I had to) Im not ashamed of feeding, far from it, however it was always a quiet private moment for me and I'd rather not share it !

    You were a bit.

I wouldn't like someone wiping my butt with wet wipes or a bit of damp fleece then smearing some cream on my bits but I'm sure lots of babies go through it on a daily basis.

Babies are different to us, things that seem unthinkable to us are tolerated by them. And also, did you realise that you don't make eye contact in the dark? Thats a good few feeds through the night where you're missing out on that important bonding time yet lots of babies don't seem to be that bothered by it.

But I'm very sure you know all that already and have an excellent reason as to why that wasn't what you meant and I'm so horrid.

The thing is, the cover ups (most of them) are designed to ensure the mother & baby actually DO have eye contact (I think they have a stiff upper edge so they stand away from the babies face but cover from the sides so they are like screens sheilding from passers by or even people sitting opposite), where as this can be difficult to maintain with a new breast feeding mum who is trying to cover her modesty & using shawls & muslins can get in the way (thats what shes finding, plus they move, gap, blow away in the wind).

I didn't ask for opinions on whether my DD should buy one, I asked for people WHO ACTUALLY HAD USED THE PRODUCT to give me a review.

If this below isn't hostile I would hate to know what you say when you are trying to be hostile........

i just used the 2 vest tops one up one down. dorothy perkins do them 2 for £9 i think it was so not alot of expense at all or even cheaper in primark.

she needs to be aware baby may not like it and she will be missing out on the bonding experience while out and about.

As I've said BF mums should support each other, not be ready to jump down their throat if they are a little hessitant in their confidence.

i had dd in nov and my biggest issue was a chilly belly if I lifted my top (find this much more discreet than pulling a top down) - I decided on a belly band that you can also use during pregnancy to coe my saggy tum and warm me up!

A bit off topic, but don't forget about libraries when looking for somewhere to breastfeed. Many have a Childrens' Library, usually with a comfy chair or too and it may possibly be quiet too.

You lucky thing, best veggie restaurant I have been to was L'Estragon at La Latina.

    sorry off topic:o

Oooh thanks for the tip - I've not been to that one.

Recently went to Al Natural (near the Prado Museum) and that was really good - amazing croquettes and home made dishes :)

  • The caff in the Prado is pretty good and v.cheap, but nothing like L'Estragon. Will check out Al natural.

My daughter had a habit of sucking for a few seconds then giving me a big grin. As she left go everyone within a couple of feet got a milk shower so maybe an umbrella would have been best for me :)
