trying to get children to behave

I am a single parent so just me to do these things, but I give "the look" that my mother gave me, or worse still "the cough" that she used, which hilariously means if my mother coughs and my sister and I are in the room we pop our heads up like meercats. :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
I also do the counting to 3 thing, funnily enough I asked DD last week (she is nearly 8) what would happen if I got to 3....she said she didn't know, and asked me, I said I didn't know either and we just fell about laughing so I think that one is out the window :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:0 -
The main threat and consequence that works with my 7 yr dd is not being allowed her DS. She managed to lose the use til next Monday today.
She was outside playing in the garden with her elder sister and some friends, when they came in to complain about some other girls shaking our gate and looking in at them. I said to ignore them and it doesn't really matter to which dd replies "See. I told you she wouldn't care!"
Needless to say OH and I hit the roof. Sent the other children back out to play and then read the riot act to dd who was then sent to her room.
She was allowed down later and after bath time tonight she tried to say she meant it in a different way but knowing dd she was just trying to worm her way out of punishment.
They've only been back from their grandparents 3 days and she is back to her pain in the bum ways!0 -

that is great - reminds me of a really cool bedtime story book we had where the single parent mum counts in fractions and the kid goes quiet at 2 3/4 and the book is dedicated to all the parents who have no idea what wil happen if theyget to 3!
Mine are 13 and 11 yr old girls and pretty good except when they decide to fight......0 -
just a couple of observations and wonder if you use this or you think its wrong?
Do you say to your children if you dont behave i will get/call your dad etc?
No, never. I don't want DS growing up thinking only men have control and power!
The one that works for me is, "I'm going to get cross, Isaac...."
He hates me being cross with him!...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
I count backwards fron 5, with the voice a little angrier on the lwoer numbers......never got past 3 for DS2 but DD has pushed it as far as 1 lately, the little madam.
We have charts so they can gain or lose spaces. If they get to the top they can choose an item from the reward bag (small cars, crayons, magazines etc)
Other than that, if they fight they go on the hall stairs for X amount of minutes and if they throw a tantrum they get chucked in their room and ignored.
Had a great one recently - DS2 was getting into a habit of hitting his little sister (more than normal), so I put pink mittens on him as a punishment.....omg if looks could kill...... blimmin worked though

I just tell them to go back and play, don't even acknowledge I've heard the the tell-taling.0
