If you get them when they are released there's no need to split - the advance fares will be cheaper than any split.
If it doesn't work out any or all of York Leeds Sheffield Brum Cheltenham and Bristol. Or London - might be a better route with a higher chance of cheap fares. Cross Country are not very generous these days.
Remenber there's no point in buying standard tickets - even split ones - in advance. They'll be the same price on the day.0 -
apparently the rail industry central body ATOC have appointed consultants to enforce a clamp down on split ticketing and have started having sites like splitfare.co.uk shut down. anyone who provides them with data will be have their access to timetable and fares cut off by ATOC despite the fact that split ticketing is perfectly legal0

Have just tried to split Southampton to Gloucester at Reading. Both Ticket Line and Cross Country make me book this as two journeys with two booking charges. At least on Cross Country I got a free E ticket from Southampton to Reading but had to have ticket posted and pay fee for second leg. In the past I could book several journeys on different weekends at once but now they are charging booking fee on each return "trip". This gets worse if you book late as then it helps to split Reading Gloucester at Swindon but now get two booking fees.
Am I missing a trick here.0 -

Yes - just buy from a company that doesn't charge.
First Great Western for example. You may get 10% off on part of the journey as well.0 -

It's likely that the cheapest way will be advance purchase singles for the complete journey.
Split ticketing is iffy - one of the obvious splits is London and getting from Huntingdon to London cheaply can't be done, negating any cheap fares further on.
A possible cheaper route is to get the X5 bus (?at St Neots) to Oxford and train from there. But it's a long drag and maybe not worth it.0 -
Hi, can someone help me? I'm trying to figure this fare splitting thing out but it's proving to be very difficult as I don't live in UK and am not familiar with the stations at all. I'm thoroughly confused as to how to do it.
Does anyone know how can I get a cheap train fare from London to Manchester on 27 Jan 2010? I think I must have missed the advanced fare because even after checking numerous sites, the best price I can find is still around 65pounds.
The alternative is to take a bus (megabus) for about 7.50pounds but the journey will take double the time.
Any advice would be most appreciated. Thank you!0 -

You haven't missed the advance fares - they haven't been released yet. When they are they won't sell out imstantaneously.
So just be patient - probably for another month.0
