  • I really don't understand how someone could possibly hate a faceless corporation that doesn't really do much wrong. If you don't want to pay then you don't want to pay i don't see why it should be lied about. If anyone is in the wrong, it's the person who is cracking it and uploading it for the whole internet community to download

Fair point. What I dislike about MS is it's sheer size and clout. Apart from Apple (who are in a different market altogether), it is impossible for any other company to launch a competitive OS and not watch all their money go straight down the toilet. We, as consumers, are pretty much forced to stick with Microsoft. There can be no alternative, everything in the computer industry is geared towards them. In my opinion they charge the ridiculously high prices they do because people have no choice! Hope this answers your question.

    Whatever. Thief.

Don't imply that I'm a thief. You should edit that! I don't call you a plonker (even though, arguably, that would be more accurate).
  • Well, considering your hate for microsoft, i'd shiver before asking how you feel about ebay.

Can't say I feel the same way about ebay. It's a completely different scenario.
  • eBay have virtually no competition. They're the biggest and baddest. I'll stand up and say i'm a thief, but nothing in comparison to ebay/paypal. eBay are upping their sellers fees again, paypal takes a bit of every transaction. There is no real alternative to ebay, there are other auction sites, but they're all a waste of time. I find it hard to hate microsoft, Bill Gates donates ludicrous amounts of money to charity and for that i respect him, and his company.

  • Are you really missing out by not using an online aution site though? It's just a luxury surely? I can go for months without using it.

You probably can download the magazine too, there's quite a lot of that sort of thing out there.

Although I agree that pirate software is wrong and illegal, I think the situation bears some analysis.
If I don't ever intend to buy something but still vaguely fancy it, and I make a copy of it then original owner has not lost income (I was never going to buy it) and I haven't deprived them of any stock (I made a copy, I didn't steal one from a shop). Say for instance I fancied a Lotus sports car but couldn't afford one. I could go out and make a copy of one without fear of someone saying "You've made a copy! Why don't you just go steal one from a showroom?". OK Mr/Ms Lotus might complain about me copying their design but I doubt it providing I'm not going into business calling them "Lowtoss" or something.

I should say that I get all the software I need via the University I work for via entirely legal routes. I just can't help but think that large companies bleat on an awful lot about "lost revenue" when a vast quantity of illegal downloads would never actually translate into sales anyway. Lots of people might download 20GB of cheesy 80s power ballads, but nobody is ever really going to go into a record shop and spend thousands of pounds on them.

Like I said, I don't need pirate software anyway and like Eugene's Pal I don't have the money to spend on doubling the power of my PC just so I can run the latest version of Windows. I won't be running it even when the University offer it to me for a couple of quid.
