  • It is stealing, but people are generally more comfortable when millions of people worldwide are doing the same thing. I speak for myself at least

    Oh here we go...

I wondered how long it would be before someone started a lecture on morals. As I said above, I have no plans to download it as I don't have a computer powerful enough to run it. If I had downloaded it I would have a perfectly clear conscience. It's not the same as stealing from a shop!

Uhh, care to explain how thieving something online is different from thieving it from a shop (apart from the physical aspects)? Morals don't come into it - it's theft pure and simple.

Well, i'm not too sure about the OEM thing, i don't know whether microsoft changed the policy back or not, but the draft i read stated that OEM could be installed on one machine, full stop. No re-activation, so no rebooting, no changing hardware, nothing.

Very good point thought i was getting a bargain ,,cannot get confirmation about the oem issues anybody know the exact T&C ...
  • You'll have to look on the microsoft site, or look in google for vista oem policy or oem T&Cs. If this is the case, i feel sorry for people who buy the OEM, realistically vista may last 5 years. 5 years without a reboot? Good luck!

Clearly this is something we will never agree on.

In my opinion, if I were to download it would not be theft. In my particular case, I cannot use Vista so I would be an absolute lunatic to buy it. However I could download the full retail version right now as I have all the means; broadband, a DVD RW, know where to look etc. If I just took it from a shop, the shop would almost certainly lose out as it would have probably had to pay for it up front at a wholesale level. If I download it online, no one would lose out as I wouldn't buy it anyway.

I know a bloke, who ever since getting broadband, has downloaded just about every film, cd or piece of software he could, usually before they have been released for retail simply because he has nothing better to do with his time! He doesn't even use any of the stuff, he just burns it to discs and stores them somewhere! Again, he doesn't sell it on so no one loses out.

If I wanted to, I could go to Borders right now and just read a newly released book in the shop, put it back afterwards and leave the shop. Maybe the publishers, author, shop really will lose out as I no longer want to buy the book? It all depends where you draw the line. There is no black or white!

You're not wrong there! I know which one of us (and I'm sure you do too) the law agrees with though :)

Having said all that, If I did 'need' Vista I would still download it rather than pay for it as I despise Microsoft with a passion. ;)

Do you know? As far as I know, the British courts don't give a tupence as long as you don't try and sell the stuff on! Look mate, if you want to waste your money then I certainly won't stop you! Some people are smart with money others like to waste it - I know which one of us (and I'm sure you do too).... ;)
  • I really don't understand how someone could possibly hate a faceless corporation that doesn't really do much wrong. If you don't want to pay then you don't want to pay i don't see why it should be lied about. If anyone is in the wrong, it's the person who is cracking it and uploading it for the whole internet community to download
