    Defence of our borders.

Our borders? Last time I looked none of the borders of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland were under attack.
That said the government insists that's why I pay income tax to assist funding.

    Next!

Last time I checked Gaddafi said his forces would invade, and specifically attack us in our homes. The fact that this hasn't happened makes me think I have seen the benefit of this. Income tax may well go to defence, but so does fuel duty by virtue of being in the same pot.
If you think of it as 'us' verses 'them', then it's probably your side that are the villains.

I cannot believe they blame the dollar when it has strengthen slightly in past weeks. It should be around 125.9p a litre realistically.

You believe the rantings of a senile arab dictator who is desperately trying to save face? Please have a word with yourself. Those words hold about as much water as the Iraqi Information Minister Mohammed Saeed Al-Sahhaf's when he was stating the Iraq forces were slaughtering the coalition in 2003.

Note: I worked in Libya for 5 years. The Libyans are good, decent and kind people who have a great affinity for the British as we have helped, defended and assisted them since the late 19th century and they have never forgotten that.

All that said I have brought this off topic a bit for which I apologise.
I was merely pointing out that the lion's share of the price of a litre of fuel goes to the government. Oil companies make approx $1 profit on a barrel of oil. That is 1$ on 204 litres.
The government makes that and a bit more on one litre of fuel for doing nothing at all.
Who do you think should back off on their takings a bit?

I believe that a ranting dictator making threats isn't trivial, especially if they are senile. Even if there isn't / was never a serious Libyan threat then the implicit guarantee of being defended by the arms forces should a threat arise is the benefit.

Good for you, I hope you had a good time while you were there.

And I was merely pointing out how the statement "at least we see the benefit of that" holds true. You suggested that we don't see the benefit of fuel duty tax and by extension of tax in general. I believe you're wrong.

There's no dispute over who gets the bulk of the cost of a litre of fuel, but when it comes to 'fleecing' the public, huge profiteering is more fleecy than high taxation by virtue of the fact that we see the benefit of that tax in a round about way.
If you think of it as 'us' verses 'them', then it's probably your side that are the villains.

2p drop in petrol price?? and the cost of a barrell of oil has gone down by about $30!! The price o petrol should come down by about 10-15p orso!! My local morrisons cut it by 1p earlier in the week then by a further 2p last night...price stands at 131.9/litre.

The pound has been around the $1.60 mark for a number of months now so the argument that it is the exchange rate is nonsense. It is 20% lower than it was in 2008 when oil hit $147 a barrel. At that time, a barrel of oil worked out at £73.50. At the price of $108 for a barrel, with the current exchange rate, that makes it £67.50. Yet unleaded is in the region of £1.33 per litre and diesel is £1.38. In 2008 unleaded was £1.20 and diesel was £1.30 at its peak.

I find it very difficult to believe that their profit is a mere $1 per barrel. If that is the case how come the oil companies profits have increased dramatically since the oil price started to rise? If they made the same level of profit regardless of the price then their profits wouldn't rise.

If there is anything which should prompt fuel demonstrations, it is the current situation, which is far worse than the last time the public took direct action.
Everything points to the fact that fuel prices should be falling fast, but they are not shifting - why?
Could it be that the government wants the income from the VAT and other duty, and could it be that the government is again unwilling to help the people who vote them in, preferring to look after big business?
I think that we all know the answers, it is just that we cannot be bothered to protest.
  • I wouldn't put supermarket petrol in my car even it was 5p a litre cheaper.
