Sold a Phone - Dodgy Buyer

Hi all :)

I sold a phone on ebay yesterday, and I'm feeling a little uneasy, The person I sold the phone to buys a lot of phones and nearly all the feedback he leaves for others is negative 'not received', 'not as described' that kind of thing.

Any advice appreciated, but I really don't see what I can do, The phone sold for £170ish and obviously I don't want to lose that.

When I first listed the phone he sent me 2 emails asking me to do a Buy-It-Now, when I listed it as well I was in a rush so put the listing up really quickly then went back into it later to add photos and info etc, and he'd made two offers before I'd even added any details about the condition of the phone!!

Any ideas guys?

He can't claim non receipt if you send the phone using the correct postage method and complying with paypal seller protection rules (which no doubt you would anyway) y, so just take all normal precautions as you would for any buyer.

The fact he buys and sells from the same account actually makes it better in my opinion as a scammer would not take that risk.

With phones it never hurts to take down all the relevant details that ID the phone.

    Sorry, I misread the post.

You are still safe from an INR claim if you use the correct postage method. Incidentally are your seller preferences set tightly and if you've bene paid does the paypal payment say 'OK to send' and is the address in the UK?

Address is in London, Seller preferences - can't remember what they were but I have set them, this guy does have 100% feedback BUT he's only buying so he would have. It's not the 'not received' I'm too worried about, it's the 'Not as described' or claiming it's faulty when it's not.

So long as you send it Special Delivery or with a courier that offers signature online and correct insurance, then he can't open an INR dispute.

If he opens a dispute for SNAD, then he'll have to send it back at his own cost.

Why not phone ebay and point out that his behaviour is suspicious?

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Didn't even realise ebay had a phone number!!! But wouldn't they just side with the buyer and say I'm being paranoid?

Maybe I am being paranoid :o, just thinking whats to stop him claiming it's faulty and returning it for refund, then returning a duff one he's bought from someone else ?

Out of 23 feedback left for others only 7 are positive and 2 of those he says he had problems, Surely no-one's that unlucky?

Or if they were you would think that they would have stopped buying used phones online.

If he has left 16 non positives then certainly phone ebay as that suggests an inherent problem. It might also be worth looking at the sellers stats for those he left a non positive for to see if others feel the sellers were poor or it was just him.

Try and photograph the phone working, although that might not make so much difference at this point.
Send it Special Delivery (I once used Recorded, and PayPal still decided I was at fault - mine was a fraudulent buyer using someone else's account; they tried to leave me £750 out of pocket).
Print off your listing and all details of your e-mails and transactions (All of these were removed when the dispute came against me, so I had none of them to access/refer back to).
That should cover you well enough against 'Not Received'. As above, NAD you'll just get it back and he'll have to pay postage himself.

  • I give up - can't find phone number for ebay anywhere!
