Argos TV - HD ready?

Options
My son (12) bought a TV from Argos on the 27 December with his Christmas money. It was advertised both in the brochure and online as HD ready. It's been up on the wall bracket in his bedroom ever since, and he's JUST realised that it isn't in fact HD ready. We've taken a look at the packaging which we still have and there's no mention at all on there about HD readiness or otherwise. Customer Services are closed until tomorrow.

Any advice or comments? Will they take it back from us? We still have the receipt.

Thanks in advance.

  • Does it have an HDMI socket at the back? (google it for a pic) if so it's HD ready, if not - refund

Thanks for all your repiles. It's a samsung syncmastermw940mw. I've googled it and every mention of it says it's HD ready. Son was wanting it for his x-box 360 games which play in HD apparently. Sorry to apppear so dumb and vague, but this is not my area of expertise!

Sorry, the argos ref is 529/1883. It says High Definition Television ready, but there's no mention of it on the box or the monitor/screen itself.

  • There is no HDMI socket and no mention of HD Ready on the Samsung website:

    http://www.samsung.com/uk/products/monitors/lcd/lcdtvmonitors/ls19dowssedc.asp

I would say argos have made a mistake.

Thanks for that Matt, didn't think to look on there. When I click on "specifications" though, under "special features" it says "HDTV ready".... still puzzled :-/

Apparantly it is HDTV ready according to the specs. I am not sure what this is though.

It has DVI in which can transmit HD signals.

Is HDTV ready the same as HD ready?

Yes HDTV is the same as HD ready afaik.

This TV should run the Xbox 360 in HD by looking at the current resolutions it is capable of. This TV also has component and VGA inputs which can be used to connect the Xbox 360 to the TV to run High Def resolutions.

Did your son get the Xbox 360 Premium package (white packaging priced £279.99) or core version (green packaging priced £199.99) ?

If he got the Premium white package version then there will have been a Xbox 360 component cable included which you need to use to get the TV to run the Xbox 360 in HD.

If you do not have a component cable then you can buy these separately for £19.99, alternatively the VGA cable should also do the job at £19.99 too. I would always buy official Microsoft cables though.

    Xbox 360 Component Cable
    Xbox 360 VGA Cable

If you look at the picture of the back of the TV here:
    Back of Samsung TV

You will see various ports. The second port from the left (blue one with holes) is the VGA port. The five holes (coloured red, white, red, blue, and green) towards the right hand side is the component port. Either of these must be used to run the Xbox 360 in HD, standard scart/composite cables wont run HD signals.

The samsung site says this TV is capable of 1440 x 900 which is high enough to run the 360 in HD but I dont know how it will appear as it isnt one of the standard set resolutions in the options of the Xbox 360. So it may appear a little squashed in some sense, but you I cant tell without trying it im afraid.

Hope this helps, and hope I've not confused you too much.
