There are some truly beautiful features in there!

The retro things in that house are actually worth a lot of money these days!!
  • Tabbyfish - you seem to be in the same neck of the woods as me.:D

I keep looking at this one and mulling it over. The only thing that puts me off is that it seems "top heavy" ie too many bedrooms in relation to decent sized reception rooms unless you did a reshuffle, and "lost" a couple of bedrooms on the first floor and made some extra living accommodation.

A friend of mine did something similar and I have also sold quite a few town houses that had that kind of arrangement. Not keen on them myself but it could be made to work.

One of these days I might just book a viewing. I would love to know the story behind it. Did someone get bored, did the money run out, did they discover something truly horrendous once they had started stripping it back.

One thing's for sure it's not for the feint-hearted. :rotfl:

Lesson - It could just be the same reason as the previous owners of our current house (approx 200-300 years old & purchased in 2011) - they had owned it for 20 years and whilst their kids were growing up they merely *tarted it up* and lived with it as it was (whilst ignoring a very old and very dilapidated 'wing'!). Then, when their kids went off to uni they stripped the place bare - and I mean stripped.......plaster off virtually every thick stone wall, ceilings & their joists removed, roof off etc etc. They got as far as having a new (oil) heating system put it, having it re-thatched and new ceiling joists, then he fell ill with cancer and gave up. They moved into her mum's nearby farmhouse and put their's up for sale. We took it on as a *half-finished project* after it had failed to sell at auction and was deemed *unmortgageable* - the latest in a long line of projects for us, but we both have design backgrounds and revel in it ;)

We love houses that are not for the faint-hearted and always live in them whilst the work is on-going - a good deal of which we tackle ourselves. Not saying that's right for you of course as I understand your husband is unwell, but with your contacts from your time in property perhaps you have some reliable trades-people you could employ to transform it into a wonderful home? We're a long way off being finished here, and many of our walls/floors are still bare as a badger's proverbial, LOL, but at least we have hot water and heating again, having been without both for 5 months last year :o

Anyway, hope you do find the perfect place soon......

Hi Phoebe - love your story and whilst it was very very sad for the vendors of what is now your home it is good that you have managed to rescue it and complete the work.

Yes I would love this project, it is a lovely old building and I am really quite intrigued. There's no mention of it being listed which certainly would make life easier if it isn't.

Oh stop it Phoebe, stop trying to tempt me:rotfl:.

Like you and your OH with my design training I can actually see it transformed in my minds eye;). And yes I have loads of contacts - some really good trades and crafts people.

It certainly has that magic ingredient and could be turned into a very elegant townhouse.

Oh sod it, I'm going to book a viewing......Do you think I could put in a ridiculously cheeky offer.

Yeah, go for it Lesson - there's nothing to be lost by having a look ;) At least that way you can rule it in or out......d'you know how much it's been reduced by/how long it's been on for?

Good luck and hope you find a way to make it work if you love it :D

I have been watching it for about 6 months but I have a feeling it's been on the market for quite a while.

I seem to recall that it went to auction at some point with a guide price of £100k but as far as I know it has never been taken off Rightmove so I've no idea whether it has had offers or not.

I am assuming that it isn't mortgageable but that wouldn't present a problem. Obviously I would want (and probably need) to get it at a good price. The renovation costs are going to be high.

A bit of polyfilla and a lick of paint won't cut it with this one, that's for sure:rotfl:

As some others have put "dream houses" on this thread, this is the single most expensive place on the market within 40 miles of me (using rightmove)
    I really don't like pic 14 though :|
